“Do you know where you’re going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you? Do you know?” Oh sorry, I was singing the Theme from Mahogany. How could I not after seeing this new collection of Diana Ross inspired designs?

Fashion designer Peter Jensen has revealed his Spring 2014 collection and it is heavily influenced by the “Disco Diva” herself, Diana Ross. Jensen’s muse has him creating clothing with Diana’s face and lips plastered on the pieces.

Look for giant face silhouettes of the star emblazoned on sweatshirts and skirts and all-over lip prints on wrap dresses and sheaths.

I love Diana Ross and this collection pays beautiful  homage to the legendary diva. So, “Do you know where you’re going to?” I know I’m going shopping when this hits the stores.

When Jess from FLY Photography approached me for a collaboration, I had no idea the amount of talent I was dealing with. I had been approached 9 times that month by people who wanted to do creative projects, but none of them really had a game plan and most were more interested in benefiting their name instead of “teaming” up. I was starting to get frustrated until Heidi (our store manger) said, “Julie, you don’t owe anyone anything! Stay focused on what you do best and you’ll know when the right person comes along.” A day later I met Jess.

Her specialty is senior portraits, so her idea was for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique to outfit 25 girls for their senior pictures. They would come in a few days prior to the shoot for a fitting and the actual indie shoot would be done in one day around the boutique grounds.

The pictures are amazing and each girl had a blast going through the boutique and choosing items. With the help of our on-site stylists Heidi and Barbara,  each model was magazine ready! We made some new friends and helped empower some young women along the way. The girls brought their own shoes, but all of the clothing, handbags, hats, and jewelry is from the store.

Jess provided me with some great fashion shots to use for promoting the store as well as a phone app. Yep, you heard me right, a PHONE APP! I’m so glad I met Jess. She is ultra-awesome! Seriously, and just when I was coming down from the “Look Book” high, she delivered a FLY tote full of custom made thank you cards and a disc with some additional pictures of the inside of my store.

Hands On

202882-odd-fashionEver feel like you could use an extra hand or two? Well, here ya go! Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week “All Hands”.

If only these had some sort of robotic brains, you’d be able to Instagram, FB, Tweet, blog, Pinterest, Polyvore, and shop online all at the same time (not to mention the advantage you’d have if someone cut you off while driving). But, unfortunately, they’re just for looks. So, let’s give this outfit a big round of applause and hand it back to the runway (since it’s “hands down” the most awkward design we’ve seen in a while).

Space Cadet

I am loving all of the galaxy prints and space inspired styles this season. We started seeing some planetary action a while back, but it looks as though the stars have finally aligned with the universe and the fashion industry is heading toward a galactic surge.

The top above is from my store (Roadkill Ranch & Boutique) and we’re still waiting for the leggings to arrive. I just can’t get my hands on enough of this solar system look. From clothing, to shoes, to phone cases, to nail art, it’s all about outer space.

I woke up this morning with the Flash Gordon theme song in my head from Queen, so I decided to share it with you as well. I’m sure it will put you in super hero, traveling through space at the speed of light mood; because everyone needs a little “pick me up” on hump day.

Pot Head

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic for the week. This masterpiece was created  by a budding designer fresh out of the London College of Fashion. I don’t know what I’d do if I spent $20,000 a year on tuition for my child and they produced this after 4 years.

I guess I shouldn’t be so quick to judge. Maybe the instructor took them all to the 99c Store and told them to “cook up” something different.

It’s Saturday Everyday!

 

Kate Spade has just confirmed that she will release a new line of goods called “Saturday”. It’s a more relaxed look with a lower price point. Yay! Now everyone can have that preppy-chic style at a fraction of the cost! Look for bold brights with a fun  twist; clothing, accessories, and home goods are all part of the grand scheme.

Kate Spade Saturday is planned to launch in Japan in February 2013 through e-commerce atwww.saturday.jp and a flagship store in Tokyo. The brand is expected to launch exclusively online at www.saturday.com in the United States in Spring 2013.

“Through ongoing research, we saw an opportunity in the market to engage a new customer base – one that aspires to be a part of the Kate Spade New York brand. Kate Spade Saturday is born from the core values of Kate Spade New York, but is realized in a new and exciting way for this younger customer,” says Craig Leavitt, CEO of Kate Spade New York.

Crazy Catalogue Items

Neiman Marcus has just released their Holiday Catalogue and some of the “luxury” items are out-of-control!

Featured for $150,000, you can own a Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Woody-Tailgate Trailer. It comes complete with a radical sound system (including a flat screen TV), and a fully stocked bar. Tailgating never looked so good!

Or, for all of those times when you belted out Annie tunes in your bedroom without anyone discovering your raw talent, now is your chance to shine. For a mere $30,000, you can actually star on Broadway in “Annie: The Musical”. Wow! I guess the sun really will come out tomorrow!

And, just incase your hens aren’t being pampered enough, this luxury hen house (inspired by France’s Versailles palace)  can be yours for only $100,000. I’m sure the hens will appreciate the library and the crystal chandeliers.

Well, this could work to my advantage. I’ll beg my husband for the trailer and when he says no, I’ll start crying and insist on the once-in-a-lifetime chance to star on Broadway as Annie. After he tries to talk some financial sense into me, I’ll calm down and agree with him. Then I’ll let him know that I’ll be happy with just a new iPhone5, a new iPad and a new Louis Vuitton bag. Renowned makeup artist Bobbi Brown has just released her new book titled , “Pretty Powerful: Beauty Stories to Inspire Confidence”. The book focuses on real people from all walks of life. She chose powerful people who don’t like to wear a lot of makeup and enhanced their looks with the “right” kind of makeup. Get an inside look at Bobbi’s personal life, her beauty secrets and more!

And, just in case you want to ask Bobbi about creating your own natural look and empowering vibe, she’ll be at the Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills on Oct. 10th from 1:00pm to 2:30pm, for a public book signing event. Something to Crow About!

One of my favorite things to do is visual merchandising, and my creative team at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique has done it again! Since we are always on a budget, we like to repurpose old props and give them new life. We wanted to feature this season’s trends including:  glitter, studs and metallics,  but also wanted to create a sense of drama mixed with a bit of mystery.

Maggy took two old mannequins and painted rib cages on them and Barb gave new life to the bird cages with gold sparkle paint. We had so many books left over from our last window, so we decided to paint the spines black and come up with our own titles that were humorously dark and fashionably infused. We added crows with crowns, black branches (thanks to Barb’s trail excursion and some black spray paint) and lots of glitter.

The store looks amazing and I couldn’t have done it without my totally wicked, fashionably dramatic, creative team. Thanks Roadkill Girls!

Queens Rocket

Dear Monday, I’m ready to kick your ass!

I survived another trade show in Vegas last week (MAGIC) and it was incredible! The vendors, the merchandise, and the creative vibe was all insanely wonderful! I met a lot of new designers and bought so many great items for the store. I can hardly wait until it all starts rolling in.

One of my favorite new designers is Jon Fulton Adams. His screen print T-shirts are an edgy mix of fairy tale whimsy with an element of hilarious surprise. And, he had a fully decked out “Queen” representing in the booth. How could  I not stop and take pics? You all know how I love theatrical people and their hijinks. Anyway, after we chatted for a while, (and filmed a video) Jon promised that he’d turn his men’s shirts into women’s shirts just for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique! (OK, so a few other buyers were pushing for the same thing, but hey…I made him promise! ) Woot! Woot!

It’s good to be back and I wish I could tell you more about my trip. But, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.
