I’ve had the privilege of working with Jess Stalder (proprietor of FLY Photography) for a couple of years now and it’s been more than rewarding. Jess specializes in senior portraits (high school seniors) and her vision is to offer young women a lifestyle, fashion photo shoot using current trends to represent their personalty. That’s where I come in.

When you work with Jess, be prepared for every tiny detail to be exquisite! She always hosts a pre-party to introduce the idea to new clients and get the girls excited about modeling. When we met over coffee to brainstorm and plan this year’s gala, we decided to go with a gold theme. Jess wanted it to be a red-carpet-like event, so the girls felt like celebrities. And it was!

Each girl came dressed in her favorite LBD (little black dress for those of you who are new to fashion lingo). When they arrived, we applied gold, temporary tattoos and accessorized them with jewelry from Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Barbara (one of our stylists) and I set up a fabulous table of bling. Gold pieces with big jewels, lots of rhinestones and plenty of glitter were on loan to the FLY Girl celebrities for the night. We gave all of the jewelry fancy names like, “Billion Dollar Baby” and “Diamond Doll” (to name a few), and had a check list of who wore what. We also rolled out a social media contest and had prizes and swag bags to boot.

The party was held at the loft studios of EMP Photography (the coolest place in town). Thanks Joel! And Jess didn’t miss a beat with her attention to detail. From the decorations, to the gold-embossed napkins, to the gold sugar-rimmed mock-tails, it was definitely the soiree of the year!

After they book their photo session, the girls get to come down to Roadkill Ranch & Boutique a few days prior to the shoot to pick out whatever they want to wear. We help stylize them with accessories and handbags (they bring their own shoes). On the day of the shoot, Jess brings in a professional hair and makeup crew to prepare the models for their lifestyle photos. (So much better than a typical, blue cloud backdrop.)

Jess captures the personalties of her clients well as she makes them feel comfortable in their own skin. FLY stands for freeing the lovely you. What a great way to send a young woman off into the world with confidence and self esteem for her next chapter in life. I love working with Jess, I love seeing the models empowered after a shoot, I love anything that has to do with making people feel good about themselves. Thank you Jess for freeing the lovely you; you are a true goddess.

Tiffany’s Thief

2013-07-03t014338z_1759807542_gm1e9730j0501_rtrmadp_3_usa-crime-jewelrytheft.photoblog600tiffany 6214106B1

Tiffany & Co.’s former vice president of product development, Ingrid Lederhaas-Okun has been robbing her employer for some time. She was finally arrested last week and charged with stealing over 1.3 million dollars worth of jewelry. She abused her position to check out merchandise and write off or cancel the costs of the goods, later reselling them to an international jewelry company falsely as her own.

Tiffany’s smelled a rat and started an investigation revealing over 165 pieces of jewelry missing in action. Items ranged from diamond bracelets, earrings and pendants. Ingrid has plead guilty to the charges and faces up to 20 years in prison.

As a business owner for 20 years now, I’ve had my fair share of thieves. The worst part is the betrayal. I think that hurts more than the stolen goods, although in this case, the dollar amount is beyond substantial.

I’m just glad Tiffany’s caught their rat!  And for the record Ingrid, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but not stolen ones. Have fun in prison!

Fly High

When Jess from FLY Photography approached me for a collaboration, I had no idea the amount of talent I was dealing with. I had been approached 9 times that month by people who wanted to do creative projects, but none of them really had a game plan and most were more interested in benefiting their name instead of “teaming” up. I was starting to get frustrated until Heidi (our store manger) said, “Julie, you don’t owe anyone anything! Stay focused on what you do best and you’ll know when the right person comes along.” A day later I met Jess.

Her specialty is senior portraits, so her idea was for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique to outfit 25 girls for their senior pictures. They would come in a few days prior to the shoot for a fitting and the actual indie shoot would be done in one day around the boutique grounds.

The pictures are amazing and each girl had a blast going through the boutique and choosing items. With the help of our on-site stylists Heidi and Barbara,  each model was magazine ready! We made some new friends and helped empower some young women along the way. The girls brought their own shoes, but all of the clothing, handbags, hats, and jewelry is from the store.

Jess provided me with some great fashion shots to use for promoting the store as well as a phone app. Yep, you heard me right, a PHONE APP! Click here from mobile device to download Fly Photography for Roadkill Ranch I was already blown away at her organization of 25 girls, the quality of the shots, and now a phone app! And, just when I thought she couldn’t get any cooler, she sends over this Roadkill Ranch & Boutique look book that she created! Click here to check it out Look Book.

I’m so glad I met Jess. She is ultra-awesome! Seriously, and just when I was coming down from the “Look Book” high, she delivered a FLY tote full of custom made thank you cards and a disc with some additional pictures of the inside of my store.

Thank you Jess!  And thank you FLY Girls for an amazingly, successful collaboration! We will definitely be “teaming” up again! If you are looking for a creative way to express yourself please contact Jess. She will take care of you and make sure your senior pictures represent your first big step into a new and exciting world. After all, FLY stands for “Free the Lovely You.”

Lovely Bones

I’ve been seeing an influx of dinosaur bones and other skeletal images in the fashion industry lately. The first thing to catch my eye last year was this gold dinosaur necklace by Tatty Devine. I thought it was amazing! Then I brought in a few “bone” images on T-shirts and tanks and the customers really dug them. (Pun intended, but I’m also still half asleep, so have a little mercy on me.) The flamingo pic is a post we did on Instagram a few weeks ago from the boutique.

Anyway, Louis Vuitton just released this dinosaur sketch of what their windows will look like for fall. Woot! I’m so excited because we have more Jurassic-inspired items on order for Roadkill Ranch and, our featured artist for October (Matt Brady) makes handmade jewelry from the bones of (real) tiny animals. It’s creepy-cool! But we love it!

Join us on Instagram under Roadkill_ranch or Facebook under Roadkill Ranch for more pics and up-to-the-minute style and event info.

Have a great week and keep those bones strong!

Anklet Time

I hope everyone had a great weekend. The weather was beautiful, and I spent the majority of my time pool side. I love it when all of the neighborhood kids come over and jump in my pool, it’s so cute. And, I even figured out a way to make them eat healthy snacks by serving veggies and nuts in cupcake liners. (Insert evil laugh.) It’s all about the packaging.

Anyway, when you’re in the sun all day, you start noticing things like, toe nail polish colors, spots you’ve missed while shaving and your lovely, bare ankles. Seriously, it’s time to break out the anklets. When I realized that I didn’t own a single anklet, I started researching and found this great DIY site http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-anklet/ .

I hope you’re all inspired to pull out your anklets, to create your own, or to purchase a new one this season. I’m going to see some of my jewelry vendors this week, so I promise to keep my eyes peeled for some cool anklets for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Until then, stay stylish, stay creative and stay happy!

Class and Sass

This is my friend Karyn, she is the owner and lead designer of Classic Hardware. Classic Hardware is a long-standing, amazing jewelry company made in the USA, and we’re proud to carry it at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Her motto is: “Jewelry With Class and Sass.”

I had admired her “K” necklace a few weeks back while visiting her in Burbank. I loved the chunky feel with the black chain, and wished I had my own with the letter “J”.

Anyway, we met up this weekend in Orange, and much to my surprise she had a gift for me, yep, you guessed it, my very own “J” necklace. I was so excited, I put it on right away. She was wearing hers too, so we decided to be twins. (There comes a point in your life when you just don’t care anymore if you and your friend are wearing the same thing.) And that’s when the night took off. I can’t tell you everything that happened, but we kept it classy and definitely sassy.

After painting The Orange Circle red, we ended up hanging out with some artists, gallery owners (and a woman who was trying to cure breast cancer) at Havens Gastropub and had a blast. Well, except for one person, who didn’t seem to be having such a good time. My OCD kicked in and I kept trying to figure out what her problem was. Was she tired?  Was it too loud?  After a while I realized she was sad because she didn’t have a Classic Hardware initial necklace too.

Check out the link to order yours today.

This message has been brought to you by the letter “J”!

Ring Your Neck

Spring fashion is full of decorative collars and jumbo, statement necklaces. I recently previewed several spring collections and all of them featured gigantic necklaces or choker-attachments of some kind. The first picture is from Prada’s spring collection and the second picture is Chanel. I love the bold pieces, it’s an inexpensive and quick way to update your wardrobe.

So, invest in a few statement pieces this season. From spikes, to gold, to bold colors to chunky pearls, anything goes. Pair with anything from a collared blouse to a plain, old sweatshirt, and let your style shine through!

Have a glamorous day!

Runway Remorse

Victoria’s Secret’s yearly runway shows feature sexy, over-the-top styles with a borderline costume party vibe. This year model Karlie Kloss walked  the cat walk in a Native American headdress. Her leopard lingerie mixed with turquoise statement jewelry was an exotic scene. However, certain Native American groups were outraged, protesting and claiming that Victoria’s Secret is misrepresenting their culture.

The company has been apologizing profusely and has agreed to pull the look from their upcoming TV broadcast.

Ruth Hopkins, a columnist for Indian Country, said that “making a mockery of Native identity is unacceptable.”

“After years of patronage and loyalty to the Victoria’s Secret brand, I am repaid with the mean-spirited, disrespectful trivialization of my blood ancestry and the proud Native identity I work hard to instill in my children,” she wrote. “Well, I’ve got news for you, Victoria’s Secret. Consider yourself boycotted.”

Thoughts anyone?

Something to Crow About!

One of my favorite things to do is visual merchandising, and my creative team at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique has done it again! Since we are always on a budget, we like to repurpose old props and give them new life. We wanted to feature this season’s trends including:  glitter, studs and metallics,  but also wanted to create a sense of drama mixed with a bit of mystery.

Maggy took two old mannequins and painted rib cages on them and Barb gave new life to the bird cages with gold sparkle paint. We had so many books left over from our last window, so we decided to paint the spines black and come up with our own titles that were humorously dark and fashionably infused. We added crows with crowns, black branches (thanks to Barb’s trail excursion and some black spray paint) and lots of glitter.

The store looks amazing and I couldn’t have done it without my totally wicked, fashionably dramatic, creative team. Thanks Roadkill Girls!

Heidi, Barb and Maggy ROCK!!!

PS Stay tuned for pics of the Ranch side featuring “Day of the Dead” theme by local artist Leonard Fiedororwicz.

Miley’s ring

When Liam Hemsworth decided to propose to Hollywood starlet Miley Cyrus, he looked to celebrity jeweler Neil Lane to create a one-of-a-kind ring.

The ring is a 3.5-carat cushion-cut diamond ring, handcrafted in 18-karat gold with intricately carved diamond floral motifs in an art nouveau pattern. The center stone is a hand-cut antique that dates back to the late 1800’s.

And according to Neil, the cut of the diamond sparkles at any angle. Wow! Congratulations Miley, the Roadkill Girls love you!!!
