Hello Lover

Sarah-Jessica-Parker-Sex-and-the-city-Vogue-12jun13-Rex_b Sex-and-The-City-Star-Turned-SJP-Shoe-Collection-Designer

Sarah Jessica Parker is in the midst of designing and launching her own shoe line called SJP. The former “Sex and the City” star played the character Carrie Bradshaw who was a writer and a fashion whore. She coined the phrase “Hello Lover” every time she saw an amazing fashion piece, mostly referring to stilettos and pumps.  Her character persona once bragged in an episode that she owned over $40,00 in shoes alone.

It’s no surprise that Sarah Jessica Parker would eventually pair her love for fashion and her creative mind to form a shoe collection. She has teamed up with Manolo Blahnik CEO George Malkemus to create shoes, small handbags and a few trench coats. The collection, “SJP” will be sold exclusively at Nordstrom in early 2014.

Talk about a fantasy life becoming a reality. I guess “happily-ever- afters” really do exist.

Turban Time

It’s been a while sine we’ve seen the turban in a fashionable sense. In the 1960′s it was so glamorous and chic to wrap a dramatic turban-like scarf on your head. Hollywood glamorized it and the fashion industry embraced it.

I met with one of my accessory vendors yesterday and she was raving about the turban trend. She even had pre-made polyester turbans (like the one Kourtney Kardashian is wearing above) for sale.

We’ve seen a glimpse of runway shows for the past year with turbans, but now they are finally hitting the stores and the streets. I bought a ton of scarves and head wraps for the boutique, but passed on the pre-made turbans for now (only because our customers are super-duper creative and would rather twist, tie and make their own version of the head piece). I may bring the pre-made items in as it gets closer to fall; velvet and wool turbans are predicted for the future (but honestly look more like a little cloches and caps).

Look for lots of head wraps, giant bows, big scarves with added brooches, flowers and appliqués. It’s going to be a fun and fashionable summer, so give new life to your tired scarves and glam it up a bit. Plus, it’s the perfect solution for a bad hair day!

That’s a wrap!

I  love it when people think my ideas are crazy and then someone super- f**king-awesome like Karl Lagerfeld does something in the same vein!  I’ve been on an ice cream kick for a while and my creative team and I transformed the boutique into a parlor-like feel with ice cream cone sculptures and sherbet hues.
I had shared my window ideas with a few people before I went forward and they rolled their eyes like I was a lunatic and gave me a negative vibe (which is why I tend to keep my visions to myself). I’ve learned to go with my gut! And, I’m so glad I did on this.
Oh! Wow! Look! Karl Lagerfeld made ice cream shoes for the brand Melissa. (Does happy dance.) He must have been on an ice cream kick too.
I’m sure the “Debby-Downers” are all having brain freezes right now. As for me, I’m having two scoops of confidence sprinkled with dreams.
PS I love my team!!!

Put a Bow On It

katespade_005_1366.450x675 katespade_017_1366.450x675 katespade_018_1366.450x675

Kate Spade’s fall collection is colorful, wonderful and full of bows. For the past few years the phrase, “Put a bird on it!”, has made its way into everyday conversations about home décor and clothing designs. There’s even a popular youtube video (from the Portlandia show episode 2)  where Bryce Shivers and Lisa Eversman visit a stale boutique and give it new life by  adding birds to everything. It’s hilarious and has a over a million views. (Of course I’ve attached it for your viewing pleasure, it’s a must see.)

Although avian images will never die, Kate Spade’s new ad campaign has coined the phrase, “Put a bow on it!” Her designs are vibrant and cheerful with a tailored, ’80s vibe. Color blocking is huge and so are the bows she’s added to everything.

So for fall, be bright, be bold and be beautiful. And don’t forget to put a bow on it!

So Tired!

ce-402ac5a4313564f88f0e7881c773e7ce4treaded01

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic for the week and my new motto for the rest of the year, “Don’t tread on me!”

The Goodyear Dunlop Company actually commissioned designer Carl Elkins along with photography studio Mierswa Kluska to create a powerful photographic series expressing the key characteristics of the Goodyear brand.  The company is known for producing strong, robust tires that can withstand the most adverse driving conditions. This amazing art collaboration was creatively done by transforming tires into fashionable suits of armor.

So when the rubber meets the road, make sure it’s Goodyear! Hey, that’s a pretty good tag line, considering I’m still half asleep.

Oh, and what about Goodyear’s Blimp? How come the Blimp isn’t getting any fashion attention? Is it too big? Too curvy? Not fit for the runways? Alright, I’m going back to bed now.

Shadow Shows

photo

I love good old fashioned fun! When I saw these shadow cards being offered from our vendor Spitfire Girl, I immediately bought them for the store. It’s so fun to make animal and monster shadows on your wall and reminds me of when I was growing up. I had a great childhood and I was lucky to be blessed with a best friend who lived right next door. Despite the fact that both of our parents were divorced and it was tough times for everyone, April and I stuck together and helped each other get through life.

We created our own happiness. We had big dreams and big ideas and nothing would stop us! We were planning on moving to New York, because if we could make it there, we could make it anywhere! We took dance class with Steven Peck at The Fox Theater in Fullerton, (It’s ironic how my boutique is just down the street from the Fox today.) and dreamt of starring on Broadway. It kept us creative.

I remember when April would spend the night, we would stay up all night giggling. My mom would yell from her bedroom, “Get to sleep girls!” But we couldn’t help but crank call people (back then there was no caller ID), make up funny stories, and create shadow shows on the walls.

April recently sent me this video of the Pilobolus Dance Theater called “Shadow Land”. It’s a musical theater production about  a young girl who moves to New York to find her dreams and it’s all done with shadows. I got chills when I saw this, it’s absolutely amazing. And it just goes to show you that good old fashioned fun is inspiring and can foster the imaginations of everyone.

I hope you love this video as much as I do. And keep your dreams alive!!!

Hey Sunshine!

92816442291704616_6bg9LI6E_fdolce-gabbana-fw-2013-baroque-collection-eyewear-goldphoto

Designer sunglasses are always so sleek and sexy, but this season it’s all about the embellishments. Back in the late ’80s my BF Simone made me these button sunglasses when I got promoted to a Nordstrom Accessory buyer. They’re so special to me, I’ve kept them stored in my “secret” treasure box for years.

After seeing all of the designer shades that are on the market this season, I remembered Simone’s masterpiece, so I pulled them out to compare. The first picture is Prada, the second picture is Dolce & Gabbana, and the third picture is my original couture design by Simone. I think I like mine the best. Way to go Simone for being 20 years ahead of the trend. (That’s probably why she’s still an amazing fashion industry guru!)  And now I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for a pair of textured shades, I’ll be sporting my very own. (After I find the missing button.)

Keep Shining!

tumblr_mi8i0p1oDJ1qhb4xio4_1280

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic for the week. A Jack Nicholson dress complete with a black knife brooch. How thrilling!!!

This is the perfect dress to wear to your marriage counseling sessions. That way when your therapist asks you if you have anything to say, you can creepily mumble, “Red Rum.” Your spouse and shrink will be so busy analyzing your remark, they’ll leave you alone for a while. They may even suggest you get away for the weekend. By yourself!

Then, you can finally have some fun! Woot!

Just don’t go to a haunted hotel with two twins and a maze. (And don’t bring your psychic son, that would be a buzz kill.)

Inspiring Insights

Every season New York Magazine asks top designers to give us a hint of what we can look forward to in their up coming collections. Without giving away too much proprietary information, the designers were asked to submit one picture along with one word that best describes the inspiration for their fall creations. The mix varied from mod shapes to funk to outer space, but these were a few of my favorite looks. I guess I’m drawn to the mystery of things. These also seem to have a “Hitchcock” vibe, and well, I love Alfred Hitchcock. Sold!

The first picture is Kenneth Cole and the word is “Liberation”.

The second picture is Monika Chiang and the word is “Flight”.

The third picture is Cynthia Rowley and the word is “CuRious”.

The fourth picture is Yigal Azrouel and the word is “Temptation”.

The last two pictures are my submissions. They’re posters from the original movie release of  ”The Birds”. I’m pretty sure I’ve nailed the inspiration source. Who can deny it? My words for both would be “Hitchcock”.

I’ve attached the final scene from the 1963 thriller “The Birds” by Alfred Hitchcock for your morning suspense fix. I hope you like it. Guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Bam! Pow! Wow!

DownloadedFile-2Barneys-Lichtenstein-2737_120819508800.jpg_carousel_partiesBARNEYS NEW YORK PILLOW_19C0192Picture 2 Picture 3Barneys-Lichtenstein-2230_120809506613.jpg_carousel_parties

The late Roy Lichtenstein has proved to be an iconic 20th century Pop artist. His comic book inspired art was a big look in the ’80s and is now being resurrected at Barney’s New York. Thanks to the Art Production Fund (a non-profit organization which supports public art projects) together with Roy’s wife Dorothy and the Lichtenstein estate, the artist’s works will medium through home décor items.

In honor of the exclusive Roy Lichtenstein collection, Barney’s held a Pop Art party in his favor. The windows were decked out with giant recreations of Roy’s signature plates, cups and frisbees, while guests dressed in bright, bold, cartoon-like outfits. All-American finger food like miniature grilled cheese sandwiches dipped in tomato soup and tater tots were served with Coca Cola.

Some of the home items include: water bottles, beach towels, place-mats, dish ware and pillows. It’s a fun and happy collection and 25% of the proceeds will go to benefit the Art Production Fund.

I’ve been noticing a surge of comic-book inspired T-shirts and accessories in the fashion world lately. I’m predicting a pulp-like, ’80s- inspired, Pop Art revolution soon.

Mark my words.
