During Thom Browne’s runway show at New York Fashion Week, everything was coming up roses. The stage was set with a magical, winter forest scene, while male models lay strapped to metal beds donning Browne’s menswear styles and crowns of thorns. The women were dramatically dressed with a huge emphasis on red roses, blooming on everything from tights to dresses to jackets. Each model carried a fresh bunch down the catwalk and cast their bouquets on the death-like men.
Interpretation? It seems like he is putting to death his men’s line as a sacrifice to focus on his women’s collection. I noticed that none of the roses have thorns, so perhaps it’s translating into a season without curse? That’s my best shot.
According to Mr. Browne, “The inspiration was strong women, strong shoulders, strong hips. The rest was just riffs on the color red.”
