So Tired!

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic for the week and my new motto for the rest of the year, “Don’t tread on me!”

The Goodyear Dunlop Company actually commissioned designer Carl Elkins along with photography studio Mierswa Kluska to create a powerful photographic series expressing the key characteristics of the Goodyear brand.  The company is known for producing strong, robust tires that can withstand the most adverse driving conditions. This amazing art collaboration was creatively done by transforming tires into fashionable suits of armor.

So when the rubber meets the road, make sure it’s Goodyear! Hey, that’s a pretty good tag line, considering I’m still half asleep.

Oh, and what about Goodyear’s Blimp? How come the Blimp isn’t getting any fashion attention? Is it too big? Too curvy? Not fit for the runways? Alright, I’m going back to bed now.

I know what you’re thinking; it’s not “Freaky Friday Fashion” day yet, so why is she posting a transvestite in a Jaws bustier? That picture was taken last year at The Blondes runway show and since then, we’ve seen a resurrection of  “Jaws” merchandise in the fashion world.  From shark tooth jewelry to bloody mouths, it’s all about the 1975 summer horror flick that kept a lot of people from enjoying the beach that year.

Look for the original Jaws poster and shark mouths on T-shirts, tanks and totes, and twisted humor like this “Little Mermaid” swimsuit. The bottom picture is what we have now at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique, so get your cult-like vibe on this summer and dare to sport the mindless, eating machine. According to Steven Spielberg, “It’s like God created the devil and gave him JAWS!!”

I’ve attached the 1975 trailer from Jaws for your viewing pleasure. Watch at your own risk, it’s rather biting!

Smell Ya Later!

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week. Pizza Hut perfume. Yep, it’s true, the chains in Canada have launched their own signature scent. Geeze! Finally!!! I’ve been waiting for a perfume to keep  me smelling like fresh garlic and pepperoni all day!

I really do love the packaging, it’s pretty clever.

Shadow Shows

I love good old fashioned fun! When I saw these shadow cards being offered from our vendor Spitfire Girl, I immediately bought them for the store. It’s so fun to make animal and monster shadows on your wall, it reminds me of when I was growing up. I had a great childhood and I was lucky to be blessed with a best friend who lived right next door. Despite the fact that both of our parents were divorced and it was tough times for everyone, April and I stuck together and helped each other get through life.

We created our own happiness. We had big dreams and big ideas and nothing would stop us! We were planning on moving to New York, because if we could make it there, we could make it anywhere! We took dance class with Steven Peck at The Fox Theater in Fullerton, (It’s ironic how my boutique is just down the street from the Fox today.) and dreamt of starring on Broadway. It kept us creative.

I remember when April would spend the night, we would stay up all night giggling. My mom would yell from her bedroom, “Get to sleep girls!” But we couldn’t help but crank call people (back then there was no caller ID), make up funny stories, and create shadow shows on the walls.

April recently sent me this video of the Pilobolus Dance Theater called “Shadow Land”. It’s a musical theater production about  a young girl who moves to New York to find her dreams and it’s all done with shadows. I got chills when I saw this, it’s absolutely amazing. And it just goes to show you that good old fashioned fun is inspiring and can foster the imaginations of everyone.

I hope you love this video as much as I do. And keep your dreams alive!!!

So Commercial!

My BFF April and I met when we were 3 years old. We grew up living next door to each other in Anaheim and have remained close to this day. She now owns a successful beauty salon in Las Vegas and has recently landed her own radio talk show about the beauty industry and all things “GLAM”. It’s called Atomic April’s Radio Glam. It airs every Tuesday from 3-4 pm, and every Friday at 1pm on Sunday at 10 am is the rebroadcast.

Anyway, I’m so excited that Roadkill Ranch & Boutique is an official sponsor of her show. She just created our first radio commercial in her studio and it aired for the first time yesterday at 3. I love it! I took some pictures and made a slide show, so now we have audio and visual. I hope you like it. Listen closely to the end disclaimer; it’s a bit of April and Julie’s on- going shenanigans. (Stay true to your weird self.)

And don’t forget to listen in and spread the word about her show- Atomic April’s Radio Glam.

Thank you April for always supporting us and for your amazing ability to turn any subject into laughter. A big thanks to Ray from Black Acre Leather and Megan Jeanne Photography (and her models) for capturing some great lifestyle shots. I’m so thankful to have great relationships with truly amazing and creative people.

Support those who support you and forget about those who forget about you. It’s that simple.

Hey Sunshine!

Designer sunglasses are always so sleek and sexy, but this season it’s all about the embellishments. Back in the late ’80s my BF Simone made me these button sunglasses when I got promoted to a Nordstrom Accessory buyer. They’re so special to me, I’ve kept them stored in my “secret” treasure box for years.

After seeing all of the designer shades that are on the market this season, I remembered Simone’s masterpiece, so I pulled them out to compare. The first picture is Prada, the second picture is Dolce & Gabbana, and the third picture is my original couture design by Simone. I think I like mine the best. Way to go Simone for being 20 years ahead of the trend. (That’s probably why she’s still an amazing fashion industry guru!)  And now I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for a pair of textured shades, I’ll be sporting my very own. (As soon as I find the missing button.)

Anklet Time

I hope everyone had a great weekend. The weather was beautiful, and I spent the majority of my time pool side. I love it when all of the neighborhood kids come over and jump in my pool, it’s so cute. And, I even figured out a way to make them eat healthy snacks by serving veggies and nuts in cupcake liners. (Insert evil laugh.) It’s all about the packaging.

Anyway, when you’re in the sun all day, you start noticing things like, toe nail polish colors, spots you’ve missed while shaving and your lovely, bare ankles. Seriously, it’s time to break out the anklets. When I realized that I didn’t own a single anklet, I started researching and found this great DIY site .

I hope you’re all inspired to pull out your anklets, to create your own, or to purchase a new one this season. I’m going to see some of my jewelry vendors this week, so I promise to keep my eyes peeled for some cool anklets for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Until then, stay stylish, stay creative and stay happy!

Inspiring Insights

Every season New York Magazine asks top designers to give us a hint of what we can look forward to in their up coming collections. Without giving away too much proprietary information, the designers were asked to submit one picture along with one word that best describes the inspiration for their fall creations. The mix varied from mod shapes to funk to outer space, but these were a few of my favorite looks. I guess I’m drawn to the mystery of things. These also seem to have a “Hitchcock” vibe, and well, I love Alfred Hitchcock. Sold!

The first picture is Kenneth Cole and the word is “Liberation”.

The second picture is Monika Chiang and the word is “Flight”.

The third picture is Cynthia Rowley and the word is “CuRious”.

The fourth picture is Yigal Azrouel and the word is “Temptation”.

The last two pictures are my submissions. They’re posters from the original movie release of  “The Birds”. I’m pretty sure I’ve nailed the inspiration source. Who can deny it? My words for both would be “Hitchcock”.

I’ve attached the final scene from the 1963 thriller “The Birds” by Alfred Hitchcock for your morning suspense fix. I hope you like it. Guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Bam! Pow! Wow!

DownloadedFile-2Barneys-Lichtenstein-2737_120819508800.jpg_carousel_partiesBARNEYS NEW YORK PILLOW_19C0192Picture 2 Picture 3Barneys-Lichtenstein-2230_120809506613.jpg_carousel_parties

The late Roy Lichtenstein has proved to be an iconic 20th century Pop artist. His comic book inspired art was a big look in the ’80s and is now being resurrected at Barney’s New York. Thanks to the Art Production Fund (a non-profit organization which supports public art projects) together with Roy’s wife Dorothy and the Lichtenstein estate, the artist’s works will medium through home décor items.

In honor of the exclusive Roy Lichtenstein collection, Barney’s held a Pop Art party in his favor. The windows were decked out with giant recreations of Roy’s signature plates, cups and frisbees, while guests dressed in bright, bold, cartoon-like outfits. All-American finger food like miniature grilled cheese sandwiches dipped in tomato soup and tater tots were served with Coca Cola.

Some of the home items include: water bottles, beach towels, place-mats, dish ware and pillows. It’s a fun and happy collection and 25% of the proceeds will go to benefit the Art Production Fund.

I’ve been noticing a surge of comic-book inspired T-shirts and accessories in the fashion world lately. I’m predicting a pulp-like, ’80s- inspired, Pop Art revolution soon.

Mark my words.

Get Laced

Costume Institute Benefit

Do you want to know what’s hot now in the fashion world and trending into fall?

Not only are designers using lace details, but they are also using head-to-toe lace outfits. Whether it be a solid lace pantsuit or a dress, or a simple camisole treated with lace, anything goes.

These are a few of my favorite designs from recent runway shows.

The first is a high-neck, lace blouse by Dolce & Gabbana. It adds a little mystery and sexiness to a day skirt.

The second picture is Roberto Cavalli. I love the textures and silhouettes of this ensemble. It’s the perfect mix of femininity and innocence infused with high style.

The third picture is Valentino. It’s dramatic and fierce, yet there’s a certain serious vibe about it.

The fourth picture is of Marc (Have I told you I love you?) Jacobs in an all-over lace outfit. I’m telling you, there’s nothing this man can do fashionably wrong in my eyes. Also, this picture was taken back in 2012, it just goes to show you how ahead of the trend he is. A true visionary!

So get laced! Add a little lace top to your boyfriend jeans, or take a lace dress and pair it with summer sandals. Look for colored lace and lace detailing on skirts, jackets, shoes and handbags.
