Virgin “mega man”, Sir Richard Branson, has commissioned fashion designer Vivienne Westwood to create new uniforms for all of the filght attendants aboard Virgin Atlantic Airlines.
Branson and Westwood have always been flying ahead of their time, so it’s no surprise that the two joined forces. Vivenne Westwood (AKA Queen of Punk) is largely responsible for bringing Punk and New Wave into the mainstream. Not only does she have edgy boutiques around the world, she also gained notoriety for designing clothes for the Punk band The Sex Pistols. Branson is widely known for his Virgin empire. He opened record stores in the ’70s called Virgin which later became the Virgin Megastores. He also developed the chic Virgin Atlantic Airways, which lands him in the 4th richest citizen in the UK spot (according to Forbes).
The new uniforms are made from recycled materials and have a sexy and timeless feel to them. Although Vivienne is known to thrive on shock value, you won’t see any tattered clothing or razor blade accessories on this project. Look for slim-fitting pencil skirts and 3 piece suits. It’s very classy and glamorous, and speaks volumes about bringing back the luxury of travel.
The uniforms will be ready for take off in July and will outfit over 7,500 employees of Virgin Atlantic Airlines. I hope it’s a safe landing for everyone. Until then, please enjoy your flight!
