Tiffany & Co.’s former vice president of product development, Ingrid Lederhaas-Okun has been robbing her employer for some time. She was finally arrested last week and charged with stealing over 1.3 million dollars worth of jewelry. She abused her position to check out merchandise and write off or cancel the costs of the goods, later reselling them to an international jewelry company falsely as her own.
Tiffany’s smelled a rat and started an investigation revealing over 165 pieces of jewelry missing in action. Items ranged from diamond bracelets, earrings and pendants. Ingrid has plead guilty to the charges and faces up to 20 years in prison.
As a business owner for 20 years now, I’ve had my fair share of thieves. The worst part is the betrayal. I think that hurts more than the stolen goods, although in this case, the dollar amount is beyond substantial.
I’m just glad Tiffany’s caught their rat! And for the record Ingrid, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but not stolen ones. Have fun in prison!
