My Type

Mary-Katrantzou-typewriter-dress

Mary Katranzou typewriter dress closeup

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic for the week, a typewriter dress by London designer Mary Katrantzou.

I’ve been searching for something to wear to my next blogger convention that will stand out, and this is perfect! I’m sure I’ll get plenty of press attention and social media comments in this frock. It’s just my type.

Take as Needed

Betsey Johnson is so fun and creative!  I had the privilege of meeting her last year at the MAGIC Trade Show and her energy stuck with me for months. (I know I’ve posted this pic before, but you would too!)

As she prepares for the upcoming New York Fashion Week, Dr. Johnson decided to make invitations out of pill bottles. (No letter press or gold-foiled cards for this lady.) She took medicine bottles and filled them with mini-breath mints then added the information about the event on the outside label. Brilliant!

Betsey describes her collection as a “prescription for dressing.” So, it only made sense to create a doctor-ish-inspired invite.  “I have to take credit for the idea,” she said. “I think getting a bottle of pills is just funny.”

Betsey has always been known for her dramatic and over-the-top runway shows. She says that this show will express a different side of her. (Really? What side is that? People don’t change!)

“It’s more of a real fashion show than ever,” the designer explained. “And I was really scared of it being too serious, too simple, too much a fashion show and not fun.”

Dear Betsey,

I don’t think anything you do could ever be simple or boring. Please step out onto your New York balcony, take a deep breath and remind yourself who you are! You’re a world-wide cultural icon and fashion leader. Fun is your middle name and creativity runs through your  veins. I love your prescription bottles, they’re great! I think everyone should have some Betsey pills, then maybe this world would be a better place. Have an awesome, cart-wheel-filled show!

Love,

Julie Rasmussen

PS Take two and call me in the morning!

Say What?!

It’s going to be a T-shirt kind of fall this season. And I’m so excited for our new merchandise to hit the store. While we were in Las Vegas last week, we met with Wild Fox. The luxury clothing company is a favorite among celebrities and high-end boutiques. They are extremely picky about who they sell to, so when they approved Roadkill Ranch & Boutique as their destination retailer in Fullerton, we were ecstatic!

The clothing is high-quality and Wild Fox is known for their graphic T-shirts with fun messages. The above pics are what we bought for the store and the styles are slated to hit Roadkill Ranch & Boutique in early October.

Several clothing companies are doing message T-shirts. So look for fun sayings, bold messages and one-worders. We bought a lot of T-shirts with music related messages and quirky blurbs. But our favorite line was Wild Fox.

We are so honored to be a distributor. One vendor paid us a huge compliment by saying, “You guys are like the Fred Segal of Orange County.” It made my day and made me think of all of our awesome customers who have helped build the store throughout the years. I love you all and hope you love what’s coming in store for you as much as I do.

Feeling grateful,

Julie

Art Skool

During our buy trip to Vegas last week, we met so many incredibly, talented people. As we were scouting the Pool Trade Show, we stumbled across this group of artists from Art Skool Clothing, and were immediately drawn to their charismatic energy and love of art. After bonding over designs, we found out they too are from Orange County, grew up in Anaheim and currently live in Yorba Linda and LA. Such a small world.

The artists take their own original pantings and transfer the images onto fashion T-shirts and totes. The T-shirts are not your basic Tees; they are cropped, slouched, off-the-shoulder and boast beautiful creations. They offer limited runs and the work speaks for itself. It’s such a fresh take on fashion.

And, since we participate in The Fullerton Art Walk every month, we’re trying to “woo” them to make a special guest appearance at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique for one of our shows. After all, they are locals. Wink!

Check out their website for awesome wearable art at http://www.artskoolclothing.com and stay tuned with Roadkill Ranch & Boutique for upcoming info about fashion and the arts.

Pictured left to right is Eric La Barr, Jay Costelo, and Natalie Marie Ames. We love this energetic, passionately, creative team and wish them tons of success.

Happy Monday! For those of you who were worried about me because I didn’t blog last week (yes, I have this wonderful fantasy life where people actually care), I’m OK!

Heidi (the store manger of Roadkill Ranch & Boutique) and I flew into Las Vegas last Sunday night for the Magic Trade Show. We walked miles and scouted amazing, new finds for the store. Every second was a blast. We made some new friends, bonded with old faves, and even had time to fit in a little karaoke. (Yep, I played Vegas with my BF April.)

We got back to town late Wednesday night. Thursday I went to LA twice, boy was that a fun day! NOT!!! Then back to LA again on Friday for more vendor meetings. I worked at the store all day Saturday and then ended the week yesterday with my son’s 8th birthday party.

We had a family get together with masks, wigs, glasses and stick-on mustaches. The kids had a blast and so did some of the adults. (Love it when my bad-ass-gangsta boys play dress up with me.) We served super-bubbles and star-shaped sunglasses on platters and had lots of balloons for everyone. So you see, I really do have a good excuse for not blogging last week (because I know you all care), plus the internet service in Vegas SUCKS!

Anyway, I’m back on track and will share some super-awesome fashion stories with you soon.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Love Always,

Julie

What The Shell?

photoFavim.com-8666 isla-mujeres-mex147conch-shell-house-isla-mujeres-mexico

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, shell headdresses and hair styles. They’re  actually really beautiful in these photos, but it’s definitely not a look for everyone. I’m still trying to think of one person that would wear this “shell-iffic” chic trend.

I came across this amazing custom-built home in New Mexico which is truly a masterpiece. Then it dawned on me, the person who wears this hair style, probably lives in this house. And she probably sells sea shells by the sea shore. And her name is probably Shelly. And I probably better go now.

OK Bye.

Happily Ever Afters

Disney and Harrods of London will be auctioning off 10 princess-inspired, couture gowns for charity. The gowns are fashioned after Disney’s princess stars like Snow White, Cinderella,  Jasmine and more. Each gown is handcrafted by some of fashion’s most respected designers.

The first pic is a gown in honor of Snow White by Oscar de la Renta.

The second pic is a gown in honor of Princess Jasmine by Escada.

The third pic is a gown in honor of Mulan by Missoni.

The last pic is more of the collection that is due to meet the gavel at Christie’s Auction House in November. All of the proceeds will go to benefit the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

So, if you’ve always wanted to play “dress up” and pretend to be a “pretty princess”, it looks like your dreams are about to come true. Now you can purchase a bespoke gown of your very own and help sick children at the same time.  A total princess thing to do.

I just hope a wicked witch doesn’t show up and try to poison everyone. Beware of the beady-eyed phony with an apple who pretends to be your best friend. Maybe Christie’s should just hang a sign on the door that reads: No Witches Allowed! That should keep them out, at least long enough for you to get your fairy tale frock on, grab a cab to SoHo, and begin to live happily ever after!

Boop-Oop-a-Doop

I have to admit, I have never been able to grasp the “Bettie Boop” phenomenon that continues to live since Max Fleischer debuted the cartoon in 1931. Perhaps I’m sick of seeing her image plastered on cheaply made handbags, magnets and mugs. I refuse to join the cult and I know I’m not the only one who thinks this way. My friend Tula and I have this on going joke– every time we see a Bettie Boop product we take a picture and text it to each other with a snarky message like “thinking of you” or “look what I just bought for you.” But now, we just might be eating our words.

The fashion line Joyrich of LA, has successfully brought classic, child hood, cartoons and elements into the fashion world by incorporating them into their designs. Their last project was a lucrative endeavor with Mickey Mouse and now they’ve launched, yep, you guessed it, Bettie Boop!

The above pictures are gorgeous, and a far cry from tin lunch boxes and over-sized T-shirts. I love the Pop Art direction with an infused comic vibe, it’s just what this character needs. Maybe this caliber of style will raise the bar on Boop items and give Bettie the recognition she deserves. After all, she was seducing audiences in her wiggle dress and garter belt long before Marilyn Monroe and Mae West hit the scene.

I promise not to say anything negative about the star, I wouldn’t want to take her “Boop-Oop-a-Doop” away. And I wish Joyrich much success, they’ve definitely got the quality and design part down. However, if I end up seeing this collection on the racks at an outlet somewhere, you can bet your bottom dollar Tula is going to be getting some good text messages. (I’m just sayin’!) Let’s hope for the best!

The last picture is of Mae Questel who was the voice of Bettie Boop with the animation creator Max Fleischer.

Creative Chaos

cl1 cl2 cl3 cl4 cl5 cl6Scan 132250000

I’ve received a lot of great feedback about my blog lately, but several people have suggested they would like to see me insert a bit more of my personal life. Oh. OK. Well, here ya’ go. Here’s my crazy closet that’s over flowing into the bedroom so much that I’ve added a rolling rack. I didn’t even bother putting doors on my closet, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to close them anyway.

Although this may look out-of-control to you, I like to think of it more as creative chaos. The last pic is of me in front of my closet in the early ’80s. I remember this day because my friend Jennie was cracking up while I was singing  Bette Midler’s “The Rose”, so she took this picture. Notice my stuffed closet in the background? See! People don’t change; they just change their clothes.

And the only reason those sweaters in the background are half-ass folded, is because my mom would threaten to kick me out of the house if I didn’t take care of my clothes. And I would threaten to kill myself if I didn’t get a bigger closet or at least a bigger dresser. I was a horrible teenager, until I got my first job and realized what earning a paycheck was all about.

So, I hope you enjoy my beautiful mess. And for those of you who keep trying to change me by suggesting I get rid of my things, it’s probably not going to happen. I was born this way. Here’s a suggestion to you: how about you turn my garage into a closet? It would be cool to paint the floor with chalkboard paint, add some hanging bars, a few shelves, a three way mirror and maybe even a mannequin or two.  That would be awesome!!!

Stay true to yourself!!!

Glam Rock

01-jennifer-aniston-september-glamour-w352jennifer-aniston Jennifer Aniston is no stranger to the spotlight, especially when it comes to her personal life. The former Friends star has been on a dusty, rocky road with relationships. But now, it looks like she’s shining like a diamond in the sky. Or, maybe it’s the reflection of her 8 carat diamond ring? That’s right, 8 carats!!! Actor, Justin Theroux, proposed last year and rumors have been flying ever since. The ring is undeniably gorgeous, and haters everywhere are making their claims about how gaudy and big it is. Really? Don’t they have anything better to pick on, besides Jennifer Aniston’s rock and her new found happiness? She recently posed for Glamour Magazine and is donning her sparkly friend on the cover. She speaks candidly about her struggles, her highs and lows, and her road to happiness. “If you’re not happy you can become happy. Happiness is a choice.” She tells Glamour. Check out the September issue of Glamour. Jennifer looks amazing and so does her left hand. Remember to keep shining; true stars shine the brightest in the dark. I guess the haters have their place too. You’re an inspiration Jen! Thanks for encouraging us to not settle for second best just because things get difficult or circumstances arise beyond our control. Twinkle, twinkle happy star. xo
