OH MY GAGA!

At Christie’s Auction House in NYC last week, Lady Gaga dropped $295,000.00 on three pairs of worn Alexander McQueen shoes! The shoes ironically were worn by the star herself in her Bad Romance video and on the Red Carpet, but she never owned them, until now. The armadillo soles were handcrafted in Italy from wood and python skin and have become an iconic look for the pop star.

It must be nice to drop over a quarter of a million dollars on crazy-couture shoes. And no, I’m not jealous (fingers crossed behind back). Although I do have to say, it wasn’t a completely irresponsible spending spree; the money raised from the auction went to benefit UNICEF’s relief efforts in Nepal. Thank you Miss Gaga, that was very Lady-like of you.

She considered the late designer a friend as well as a tremendous source of inspiration and support. Lady Gaga released this personal statement to V Magazine describing her cosmic revelation of the shoes and her personal relationship with Alexander McQueen.

“There is no diamond, no award, nothing I ever wanted more than a memory of my brief friendship with McQueen. I am sad every day that I enter my closet, knowing he is not here anymore to dazzle the world with his beautiful, dark, limitless, brave mind. These shoes are the only tangible piece I have left of our work together. They came to me this morning, after a dream I had again about him. As the dream goes, I enter my closet and his clothes are no longer there. I’m tortured. The loss is deep. Mourning in my own way constantly, why he is gone, he was so talented. I hate the empty space, not only in fashion, but in the creative consciousness that fizzled when he passed. This morning I got the call I would now be the caregiver to 3 pairs of armadillo platforms, just like the kind I wore in the “Bad Romance” video, the shoes from his crescendo collection “Plato’s Atlantis,” the ones that made everyone gasp from the front row because they had NEVER seen something like them before. I was reminded this morning that he is still here. He is everywhere. In every store window. In the designs of commercial mainstream retail, fashion, in music, in the heart of every young designer that wishes he could be as free and as fearless as McQueen was. I cried all morning, convinced he was with me. Convinced that I’m loved from somewhere far beyond the eternal body and mind, outside of all the chaos. He wanted me to have them. They made their way back to me. I am here today not just because of my talent, but because he believed in me. My weird brand of art pop manic expression of my emotions was the part of me he knew he taught me. I will be grateful long after I pass and join him wherever it is they put souls like us. Long live McQueen.”

I really do believe what’s meant to be will always find a way, just like these shoes found their way back to Lady. So, trust in the mystery of your journey and believe in the power of your dreams.

One of my favorite movie lines is from The Devil Wears Prada.  Meryl Streep, who plays Miranda Priestly, the tyrant magazine editor, asks her staff what they’ve come up with for spring. “Well…they’re showing a lot of florals right now, so I was thinking..”

Miranda: “Florals? For spring? Ground breaking.” She replies in her usual, sarcastically-irritated and far-from- amused voice.

It’s just so typical and expected of the fashion world to do flowers in spring and trees and leaves in the fall. However, this season, there’s a new twist with roses for fall. Although it’s not completely groundbreaking, it is a fresh take on the “love” flower.

A single red rose has always been symbolic for expressing deep affection to someone. It’s been used in poems and writings for centuries that pertain to emotions (remember Bette Midler’s song The Rose?).  And a multitude of roses? Well…that’s just pure bliss!

The first pic is from the Alexander McQueen runway show. The collection is full of heavy fabrics emblazoned with roses. Designer Sarah Burton calls this collection The Spirt of the Rose. She describes it as, “A flower that begins with a tight bud that opens into a lush bloom and then eventually collapses back onto itself in gorgeous decay.”

The second pic is of Roadkill Girl Sydney Beaver in our House of Fame dress, Jeffrey Campbell glittered Mary Jane shoes and our rose stud earrings. We surrounded her with all of our rose hair clips for a dramatic statement.

The rest of the pics (including the rose-encrusted sunglasses) are from the Dolce and Gabbana runway show.

Look for heavier weighted fabrics like wool, faux-fur, velvet and paper-thin leather parading the rose. Add sheer overlays and lace layering pieces for ultra-feminine style.

And just because it’s not spring, doesn’t mean you can’t express yourself in a deeply emotional and purely fashionable way by wearing a rose (or twelve).

I’ve attached Bette Midler’s beautiful ballad, The Rose, for your listening pleasure. (Duet with Wynonna Judd.)

Sole Searching

Before I moved into my house a few years back, I was on a de-clutter mission. I went through everything from old make-up, to dishes that didn’t match, to piles of useless paper clutter, and I tossed, tossed, tossed.

Unfortunately, I read an article about closet purging where the author suggested to get rid of items that had not been worn in over a year. So, me being mission-oriented at the time, got rid of shoes, clothing and handbags.

My move was smooth and uncluttered. Then one day I woke up and realized I didn’t have any of my cool stuff! What was I thinking?! I’m a collector! I’ve been in the fashion industry for over 30 years, I started my boutique in 1993 and it was full of hand-picked (by me) vintage items. (Most of which ended up in my closet.)

When I think about the handbags and shoes I carelessly gave away, I start to cry. Note to self: DO NOT GET RID OF COOL STUFF! EVER!

Anyway, it’s time to reclaim my identity. I’m on a search for a pair of dramatic shoes that I can pair with my LBD or my boyfriend jeans (depending on what kind of mood I’m in) and these shoe pics are an inspirational start.

The first two pics are Alexander McQueen.

The third pic is Lanvin.

The fourth pic is Dolce & Gabbana.

The fifth pic is Balenciaga.

And the last two pics are designed by Caroline Issa for L.K. Bennett.

I am determined to get my handbag and shoe collection going again; this time for keeps. On a good note, you’ll be happy to know that I miraculously kept my vintage jewelry and Avon bottle collections. Thank God!

Clammed Up

McQ.1103a–d.L

SL.15.2011.9.35a, d_mcq.1103.AV1

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, the clam dress. This was made years ago by the late designer Alexander McQueen. I thought his death was tragic and untimely, but his creativity and ability to think outside of the box will inspire me for the rest of my life. I love how he was just walking with a friend along the beach and decided that the empty clam shells needed to be repurposed into a couture gown. Love that mind! You are missed!

In McQueen’s Words

“My friend George and I were walking on the beach in Norfolk, and there were thousands of [razor-clam] shells. They were so beautiful, I thought I had to do something with them. So, we decided to make [a dress] out of them. . . . The shells had outlived their usefulness on the beach, so we put them to another use on a dress. Then Erin [O’Conner] came out and trashed the dress, so their usefulness was over once again. Kind of like fashion, really.”

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I don’t need to write anything. Although I do have one thing to say, “Alexander McQueen”.

Red Carpet Recap

Picture 2slide_274459_1978304_free_1Picture 9Picture 8Picture 10

The 70th annual Golden Globe award ceremonies took place last night in Beverly Hills at the Beverly Hills Hotel. It was a star studded event that still has everyone talking! Congratulations to everyone who took home statues and to everyone who continues to make the entertainment world a better place.

I loved seeing all of the amazing gowns parade down the red carpet, but there were a few that had me scratching my head. Here’s my top picks from best to head scratcher.

First pick, Nicole Kidman in an Alexander McQueen gown with a studded top and mesh bodice. She looked fierce, sexy and classy.

Second pick, Anne Hathaway in Chanel. Anne Hathaway + Chanel = Perfection! Need I say more?

Third pick, Isla Fisher in a Reem Acra sheer, nude gown covered in sparkle. I love the illusion neckline. She looked pure, glamourous, and sexy all at the same time.

Fourth pick, Lucy Liu in an oversized “Belle of the Ball” dress by Carolina Herrera. The pattern is very retro, so I think it would have been a better choice to ditch the cumbersome, poof  bottom and turn it into a sleek, form fitting dress instead. I would have given her a ’40s look by replacing the “girl next door” braid with a “pin up” style hair do.

Fifth pick, Halle Berry in a flowy, one shoulder, cut-out bodice, thigh-high slit, Versace gown. Don’t get me wrong, I love Halle (and Versace). Her body is non- stoppable and she looks amazing in everything. However, I felt that she looked more like an island goddess ready to conquer the mainlanders in this ensemble. She can definitely pull off anything, but I would have liked to have seen her play a more glamourous role.

Fur Sure!

Fur Sure!
After hours of walking and talking fashion last week in Vegas, it’s safe to say that fur is a key player in this season’s line up. Look for fur handbags and clutches, colored, fur vests, and fur trim on everything from bracelets to shirt collars. Of course “real” fur is a faux pas, so pass on that (unless you want PETA lambasting and stalking you) and stick with the fun, colorful, synthetic pieces.

Movie Time

Fashion Video

For those of you who know me personally, you know that I love to make videos. As a matter of fact, I rarely leave home with out my camcorder. Anyway, a lot of the designers are making videos to represent their collections, and I have to say, that some… well… just aren’t all that. I love Alexander McQueen, don’t get me wrong, but this video doesn’t do the collection justice. It’s more like a promo for a cool, new XBOX game. And…well…I think I can make a better one. There I said it! I’m calling my collaborative friends who also make vids today! So stay tuned for a dose of Roadkill Ranch & Boutique’s fashion film in the near future.  And please leave your feedback about this video.
