Feeling Blue

chloe ss 15 8-horz

I’m feeling blue, but in a good way. Denim is my boyfriend and we’re in love.

After seeing a lot of fall collections the past few weeks, I’m excited to see the “denim on denim” look. Typically in the past, your outfit of the day (#OOTD) would consist of one denim item, but now it’s all about layering different jean washes and denim shirts with jackets to create a casual yet sophisticated look.

This industry moves so fast, I haven’t even had time to take pictures of the new jeans and indigo skirts we received yesterday. Although, I somehow managed to go thrift store shopping and purchase 20 pair of used jeans for an art project. The Roadkill Girls decided to shred denim strips and loop them through a chicken wire frame to create a back drop for our windows. We wanted to drive the message home about the importance of the excessive denim trend this season by creating texture and adding impact.

Pair your chambray top with a darker pair of jeans for a contrast look . Or, go totally tonal by wearing the same color wash of jeans, and jacket. Add some killer accessories to kick it up a notch, or play it down with a basic white T-shirt. Relaxed fit, skinny jeans, boot-cut, flairs and skirts can all be incorporated into this look.

Take your faithful boyfriend jeans and let the layering begin. It’s an easy look to achieve; it’s comfortable, playful, and lovable. Just like a good boyfriend should be. (Wink.)

Stay Stylish!

Purrr Fect!

When “Boss Lady” Mandie B. from Heart of Haute met me at the store a few days ago to view the new fall collection, I was beside myself. For the first time since inception, Heart of Haute has collaborated with an artist for an exclusive design on their clothing. And it’s feline-fab!

Heart of Haute is an independent, women-owned, clothing company specializing in retro-inspired dresses. They also happen to be one of our best lines at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Mandie always delivers great styles, fresh new prints and quality fabrics. This season she’s partnered with famed artist El Gato Gomez for an exclusive kitty-cat motif.

El Gato Gomez has gallery representation at the WonderGround Gallery at the Disneyland theme park in California, Creature Features in Burbank, California, The Harold Gollen Gallery in Miami, Florida, and the One-Shot Gallery in New York City. Her art work has also been featured at the amazing modernist cultural events, Tiki Oasis and Modernism Week in Palm Springs.

Since Mandie is a huge fan and avid collector of Gomez’s work, it only made sense to join unions. The mid-century-modern-esque styles consist of border-print dresses and full-circle skirts, matched with kitty-emblazoned, cropped cardigans. The collection is slated to hit Roadkill Ranch & Boutique in mid September and is expected to sell out!

Call the store at 714-773-1156 to book your pre-order, we don’t want any cat fights when the merchandise arrives.

For more info on the collaboration check out: http://www.elgatogomezarts.com and http://www.heartofhaute.com

Have a purrrfect day!

I’ve had the privilege of working with Jess Stalder (proprietor of FLY Photography) for a couple of years now and it’s been more than rewarding. Jess specializes in senior portraits (high school seniors) and her vision is to offer young women a lifestyle, fashion photo shoot using current trends to represent their personalty. That’s where I come in.

When you work with Jess, be prepared for every tiny detail to be exquisite! She always hosts a pre-party to introduce the idea to new clients and get the girls excited about modeling. When we met over coffee to brainstorm and plan this year’s gala, we decided to go with a gold theme. Jess wanted it to be a red-carpet-like event, so the girls felt like celebrities. And it was!

Each girl came dressed in her favorite LBD (little black dress for those of you who are new to fashion lingo). When they arrived, we applied gold, temporary tattoos and accessorized them with jewelry from Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Barbara (one of our stylists) and I set up a fabulous table of bling. Gold pieces with big jewels, lots of rhinestones and plenty of glitter were on loan to the FLY Girl celebrities for the night. We gave all of the jewelry fancy names like, “Billion Dollar Baby” and “Diamond Doll” (to name a few), and had a check list of who wore what. We also rolled out a social media contest and had prizes and swag bags to boot.

The party was held at the loft studios of EMP Photography (the coolest place in town). Thanks Joel! And Jess didn’t miss a beat with her attention to detail. From the decorations, to the gold-embossed napkins, to the gold sugar-rimmed mock-tails, it was definitely the soiree of the year!

After they book their photo session, the girls get to come down to Roadkill Ranch & Boutique a few days prior to the shoot to pick out whatever they want to wear. We help stylize them with accessories and handbags (they bring their own shoes). On the day of the shoot, Jess brings in a professional hair and makeup crew to prepare the models for their lifestyle photos. (So much better than a typical, blue cloud backdrop.)

Jess captures the personalties of her clients well as she makes them feel comfortable in their own skin. FLY stands for freeing the lovely you. What a great way to send a young woman off into the world with confidence and self esteem for her next chapter in life. I love working with Jess, I love seeing the models empowered after a shoot, I love anything that has to do with making people feel good about themselves. Thank you Jess for freeing the lovely you; you are a true goddess.

Damion Lloyd

Happy Monday! I’m a little slow this morning, I spent all day yesterday on a photo shoot for our up coming website and then stayed up all night looking through the awesome pics. Since our photographer is so passionate about cool projects, he had the pics to me within hours of the shoot. Such a pro!I

It wasn’t your normal fashion shoot. The location was amazing, our models were amazing and our photographer Damion Lloyd was (IS) amazing!

When I had told him about my idea a few weeks ago, he thought it was crazy-cool. He said, “Julie, I’m going to show up with some cool gels, an open mind and I’ll be ready to feed off your energy.” And that’s exactly what happened, we were all on a creative high, to say the least! I love working with creatively open people and Damion Lloyd is one of my faves!!!

I’m so excited to share the pics, but I have to wait a few more weeks until our site launches. Until then, you can get a hint of the vibe and a glimpse of Damion’s personality in the above pic. And just know, we’re finally making progress on our web store.

I’m so blessed to have such awesome people in my life. I believe in divine appointment and Candace Magoski is Divine! (For reals, that’s her Burningman name.) She allowed us to shoot in her cool studio and as with Damion too, our roots go deep! Thanks to the both of them for living a passionately artistic life and for helping me achieve my creative goals. I’m forever grateful.

Support those who support you and forget about those who forget abut you. Plain and simple.

Have a great week, keep your dreams alive, and surround yourself with people who believe in you.

Put a Bow On It

katespade_005_1366.450x675 katespade_017_1366.450x675 katespade_018_1366.450x675

Kate Spade’s fall collection is colorful, wonderful and full of bows. For the past few years the phrase, “Put a bird on it!”, has made its way into everyday conversations about home décor and clothing designs. There’s even a popular youtube video (from the Portlandia show episode 2)  where Bryce Shivers and Lisa Eversman visit a stale boutique and give it new life by  adding birds to everything. It’s hilarious and has a over a million views. (Of course I’ve attached it for your viewing pleasure, it’s a must see.)

Although avian images will never die, Kate Spade’s new ad campaign has coined the phrase, “Put a bow on it!” Her designs are vibrant and cheerful with a tailored, ’80s vibe. Color blocking is huge and so are the bows she’s added to everything.

So for fall, be bright, be bold and be beautiful. And don’t forget to put a bow on it!

Something’s Fishy!

One fish, two fish, gold fish, boob fish. Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, a fish bra. Brilliant! Now I know what I’m going to wear when I chaperone the kids to the Long Beach Aquarium this summer.

I also think it would be great if the OC Fair booth workers at the “Win a Fish” game wear these. That way when people complain, “What am I going to do with a gold fish?” The booth attendants can just point to their bras and say, “DUH!”

Only boring people get bored. Keep those creative juices flowing!

Candy Coated

As a boutique owner, my team and I are always trying to think of creative ways to promote the products through visual merchandising. We spend a lot of time brainstorming, making props and displaying the merchandise for our customers. So, you can imagine how far my jaw dropped  when I saw these photos from the Harbour City Mall in Hong Kong.

The amount of love that went into this exhibit is truly phenomenal, and all to promote their 3rd annual chocolate trail. During the month of Feb. they set up over 20 stands throughout the mall featuring  gourmet chocolatiers from around the world, including: Mio Miko from Belgium and  Venchi from Italy.

I’m impressed with the integrity of the show and I wish I could visit Hong Kong just to see this in person. Although the props are not edible, they certainly do the trick; I’m already craving chocolate!

Have a sweet week!

Something to Crow About!

One of my favorite things to do is visual merchandising, and my creative team at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique has done it again! Since we are always on a budget, we like to repurpose old props and give them new life. We wanted to feature this season’s trends including:  glitter, studs and metallics,  but also wanted to create a sense of drama mixed with a bit of mystery.

Maggy took two old mannequins and painted rib cages on them and Barb gave new life to the bird cages with gold sparkle paint. We had so many books left over from our last window, so we decided to paint the spines black and come up with our own titles that were humorously dark and fashionably infused. We added crows with crowns, black branches (thanks to Barb’s trail excursion and some black spray paint) and lots of glitter.

The store looks amazing and I couldn’t have done it without my totally wicked, fashionably dramatic, creative team. Thanks Roadkill Girls!

Heidi, Barb and Maggy ROCK!!!

PS Stay tuned for pics of the Ranch side featuring “Day of the Dead” theme by local artist Leonard Fiedororwicz.

Mirror Image

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week. Finally, a design for all of the extreme narcissists out there who can’t stop looking at themselves in the mirror. All this outfit needs now is a globe hat, to represent how the world revolves around them.
