Strong Ties

Trend alert!!! Gigantic,’70s inspired ties for women (and men) loom on the horizon.

I’ve recently spotted a few fearless ties in some of our accessory vendor’s collections, but when Gucci plastered the look on their runway show for spring 2016, well… need I say more?

Look for bright-colored ties with fun prints and huge icons. Pair with jeans and a collared T-shirt for a casual look, or suit up all the way for spunky, fierce style.

When we first opened Roadkill, the store was primarily vintage. I spent a good deal of my time searching through old clothes and accessories for the perfectly-curated mix. I’ve always had a penchant for ties, and would collect them on my buy trips. We sold a few at the store, but the unique ones I kept for myself, and ended up with a pretty eclectic assortment. Then one day, I was inspired (deceived) by a de-clutter article and went crazy. Yep, you guessed it, out went the ties (and some really cool shoes and handbags too). I’ve been sad for years over this temporary act of insanity. (Trust me, my therapist needs therapy after dealing with me.)

You know the old saying, “If you love something set it free, if it comes back it’s yours, if it doesn’t it never was.”? Or is it, “If you love someone…”?  Whatever.  When it comes to awesome ties (or other rare finds), DO NOT SET THEM FREE IF YOU LOVE THEM!!! My little beauties have probably been repurposed into makeup bags or fanny packs by now. (I’m crying paisley tears!!!)  Hopefully, a special one will find it’s way back to me so I can represent the trend without forfeiting my rent for a designer version.

Dare to be big and bold for spring, keep your ties strong, and never let them go.

Stay Stylish,

Purrr Fect!

When “Boss Lady” Mandie B. from Heart of Haute met me at the store a few days ago to view the new fall collection, I was beside myself. For the first time since inception, Heart of Haute has collaborated with an artist for an exclusive design on their clothing. And it’s feline-fab!

Heart of Haute is an independent, women-owned, clothing company specializing in retro-inspired dresses. They also happen to be one of our best lines at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Mandie always delivers great styles, fresh new prints and quality fabrics. This season she’s partnered with famed artist El Gato Gomez for an exclusive kitty-cat motif.

El Gato Gomez has gallery representation at the WonderGround Gallery at the Disneyland theme park in California, Creature Features in Burbank, California, The Harold Gollen Gallery in Miami, Florida, and the One-Shot Gallery in New York City. Her art work has also been featured at the amazing modernist cultural events, Tiki Oasis and Modernism Week in Palm Springs.

Since Mandie is a huge fan and avid collector of Gomez’s work, it only made sense to join unions. The mid-century-modern-esque styles consist of border-print dresses and full-circle skirts, matched with kitty-emblazoned, cropped cardigans. The collection is slated to hit Roadkill Ranch & Boutique in mid September and is expected to sell out!

Call the store at 714-773-1156 to book your pre-order, we don’t want any cat fights when the merchandise arrives.

For more info on the collaboration check out: http://www.elgatogomezarts.com and http://www.heartofhaute.com

Have a purrrfect day!

Geometric Prints

2013-2014-Fashion-Trends-For-Women-2Scan 131970000

They say geometric prints are the “new” thing. I say they copied my mom!

It’s funny how history and fashion repeats itself. But, what’s even more humorous is when designers call it “new”.

We’ve been seeing a lot of clean lines and graphic prints in the fashion world, and geometric patterns are making a come back. Notice how I said “come back.”

The first pic is a dress by Ann Betty. I’m loving the strong, bold pattern in a sweet sheath style.

The second pic is from a photo shoot on the Cult of Style blog. It’s so dramatic and really drives the geometric message home.

The third pic is from Marc Jacobs 2013-2014 runway show.

And the last pic is my mom and dad in our Anaheim house in 1971.

My mom took her style seriously and I can honestly look back and say, “Now I know why I am the way I am.”  I was constantly surrounded by design, I mean look at the velvet picture on the fireplace.

Instead of saying geometric prints are  a “new” look, I’m going to say it’s a 1971, Anaheim, California inspiration.

If only my mom would’ve kept all of her clothes, I would be able to predict the trends for ever. For now, I’ll just keep digging through all of our old family pictures. Maybe I’ll find another “new” thing.

Get Smart

It’s true!!! Former Yves Saint Laurent CEO Paul Deneve has joined Apple’s wearable technology line.

Wearable technology line? Wow! Does this mean we will finally be able to talk into our shoes like Maxwell did on the old TV series “Get Smart”? Or, maybe they’ll develop mini-mini-iPads that can be worn on the lapels of blazers or on the cuffs of dress shirts?

Wait! Pick me! Pick me! I want to be on the product development team! How about a cocktail ring in the shape of Apple’s apple that has a built-in GPS? Or how about earrings that will take the place of cell phones? They’ll be close to your ears and hands free. (Seriously Paul, call me. I’m full of endless ideas.)

I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this collaboration of clothing and technology. Two things I (and the majority of people) can’t live without.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Paul Deneve to Apple,” the company said yesterday in a statement. “He’ll be working on special projects as a vice president reporting directly to Tim Cook.”

I just hope Agent 99 shows up and adds a little mod-inspired style to the designs. That would be hot!

I was always amazed at this show when I was a little girl, it was so far-fetched, yet so believable at the same time. Now we’re living in times where this is actually happening. I’ve attached a scene from “Get Smart” for your viewing pleasure.

Put a Bow On It

katespade_005_1366.450x675 katespade_017_1366.450x675 katespade_018_1366.450x675

Kate Spade’s fall collection is colorful, wonderful and full of bows. For the past few years the phrase, “Put a bird on it!”, has made its way into everyday conversations about home décor and clothing designs. There’s even a popular youtube video (from the Portlandia show episode 2)  where Bryce Shivers and Lisa Eversman visit a stale boutique and give it new life by  adding birds to everything. It’s hilarious and has a over a million views. (Of course I’ve attached it for your viewing pleasure, it’s a must see.)

Although avian images will never die, Kate Spade’s new ad campaign has coined the phrase, “Put a bow on it!” Her designs are vibrant and cheerful with a tailored, ’80s vibe. Color blocking is huge and so are the bows she’s added to everything.

So for fall, be bright, be bold and be beautiful. And don’t forget to put a bow on it!

Hey Sunshine!

Designer sunglasses are always so sleek and sexy, but this season it’s all about the embellishments. Back in the late ’80s my BF Simone made me these button sunglasses when I got promoted to a Nordstrom Accessory buyer. They’re so special to me, I’ve kept them stored in my “secret” treasure box for years.

After seeing all of the designer shades that are on the market this season, I remembered Simone’s masterpiece, so I pulled them out to compare. The first picture is Prada, the second picture is Dolce & Gabbana, and the third picture is my original couture design by Simone. I think I like mine the best. Way to go Simone for being 20 years ahead of the trend. (That’s probably why she’s still an amazing fashion industry guru!)  And now I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for a pair of textured shades, I’ll be sporting my very own. (As soon as I find the missing button.)

Hippity Hoppity

Have you ever been so busy that you forgot what day it was?

My mom came down this week to visit (and help out with Mt. Washmore – the never ending laundry pile). We started talking about Easter plans and I suggested we talk about it next week. She laughed and said, “Julie, Easter is this Sunday.”

I completely lost track of time. (I’m still recovering from St. Patrick’s Day.) Perhaps this a sign to slow down a bit and smell the roses (or the coffee)?  I just get so carried away with projects and the day-to-day events that encompass my business, it’s hard to slow down. I might miss something, like Easter.

Anyway, as I was searching for lost inspiration, I found these designer eggs and Pantone designs that I wanted to share. And then, when I found  this picture of Marc Jacobs with his bunny ears, my heart melted and I actually slowed down for just enough time to think about him and me and …Oh nevermind!!!

Hope everyone has a Happy Easter!

Who let the dogs out?

There’s a big surge in the fashion industry involving dogs. (And no I’m not talking about the shady knock-off manufacturers, they’re called something else.) Designers everywhere are using strong and fierce dogs as their icons on T-shirts, handbags and more.

The top photo was taken at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique and the bottom two pics are Givenchy. This is just a glimpse of what is to come. Say goodbye to tiny pups and pink poodles, it’s all about the tough dog now. Because they are “Ruff-Ruff” (sorry, I couldn’t help it).

Stay stylish and don’t bark up the wrong tree!

Honorable Mention

Picture 11Picture 12Picture 8

Riviera Magazine is OC’s premiere luxury publication, so when one of the editors contacted me for an interview, I was more than thrilled. After reading my blog, she said she was impressed with the style, the Roadkill Girl name, and the fact that I own a brick-and-mortar store here in Fullerton. We chatted over Thanksgiving weekend and then yesterday I received this link in my email.

I feel so honored to be mentioned in the Best Of 2013 issue. When you work for yourself, you don’t have anyone giving you pats on the back, so this was a much needed pat!

Thank you Riviera for the recognition and the encouragement. I’m hoping 2013 is our best year yet, and what a great way to start it. In writing!

Are you an Instagram junkie? Do you like taking pictures of everything you see and do so you can share it with the world?

Wouldn’t it be cool if you just had glasses that could upload straight to Instagram?

Well, it’s not that far from reach! German visual communications designer Markus Gerke has invented a prototype that does just that. He’s created a sunglass design that would allow you to select a filter from your glasses, push the “Insta” button to activate,  and then Voila! The pictures would be uploaded immediately.

Pure genius you say? Me too! However, these are purely fictional and are still sitting in a design room in Germany. So for now, we’ll just have to do it the “old fashioned way”, I mean the “smartphone way”.

And with that being said, check out our up-to-the-minute  pics of the boutique and a day-in-the-life of the Roadkill Girls. We love staying connected so follow us on Insatgram under “Roadkill_ranch” and we’ll follow you too.
