Dolce-Gabbana-Fall-2015-Runway-Rose-Collection-1024x768

One of my favorite movie lines is from The Devil Wears Prada.  Meryl Streep, who plays Miranda Priestly, the tyrant magazine editor, asks her staff what they’ve come up with for spring. “Well…they’re showing a lot of florals right now, so I was thinking..”

Miranda: “Florals? For spring? Ground breaking.” She replies in her usual, sarcastically-irritated and far-from- amused voice.

It’s just so typical and expected of the fashion world to do flowers in spring and trees and leaves in the fall. However, this season, there’s a new twist with roses for fall. Although it’s not completely groundbreaking, it is a fresh take on the “love” flower.

A single red rose has always been symbolic for expressing deep affection to someone. It’s been used in poems and writings for centuries that pertain to emotions (remember Bette Midler’s song The Rose?).  And a multitude of roses? Well…that’s just pure bliss!

The first pic is from the Alexander McQueen runway show. The collection is full of heavy fabrics emblazoned with roses. Designer Sarah Burton calls this collection The Spirt of the Rose. She describes it as, “A flower that begins with a tight bud that opens into a lush bloom and then eventually collapses back onto itself in gorgeous decay.”

The second pic is of Roadkill Girl Sydney Beaver in our House of Fame dress, Jeffrey Campbell glittered Mary Jane shoes and our rose stud earrings. We surrounded her with all of our rose hair clips for a dramatic statement.

The rest of the pics (including the rose-encrusted sunglasses) are from the Dolce and Gabbana runway show.

Look for heavier weighted fabrics like wool, faux-fur, velvet and paper-thin leather parading the rose. Add sheer overlays and lace layering pieces for ultra-feminine style.

And just because it’s not spring, doesn’t mean you can’t express yourself in a deeply emotional and purely fashionable way by wearing a rose (or twelve).

I’ve attached Bette Midler’s beautiful ballad, The Rose, for your listening pleasure. (Duet with Wynonna Judd.)

Crazy for Clutches

Picture 5elle-givenchy-obsedia-star-studded-minaudiere-xln-lgnPicture 6 Picture 7

I love handbags! This season there’s a lot of emphasis on clutches. They’re small but mighty. Perfect for date night or other special occasions.

This season a lot of designers are focusing on the clutch bag. Almost every major collection features some sort of clutch that translates into a little work of art that you can hold in your hand. I’ve picked a few of my favorite pieces to share with you.

The first pic is Charlotte Olympia’s perfume bottle clutch. OMG!!! When I look at this I cry. It’s so frickin’ adorable! I hope someone buys this for me and then takes me to a champagne brunch.

The second pic is Givenchy. It’s perfect for a night out on the town. I hope someone buys this for me and then takes me to see a Rock band.

The third pic is Christian Louboutin’s all-over spiked clutch. I hope someone buys this for me and then takes me on an adventure (or at least to an awesome restaurant).

The fourth pic is Kate Spade’s cinema clutch. Really? Can she get any cooler? I am torn between Kate and Charlotte this season. They both bring so much creativity to their designs. Anyway, I hope someone buys this for me and then takes me to the theater. (In New York.)

I hope if you’re reading this (person who is going to buy me stuff and take me places) you realize that happiness is at your fingertips, so get a grip.

Socks Please!

12socks_sandals_copy_2Prada-Fall-Winter-2012-2013-Advertising-Campaign-26

We’ve seen designers and runway shows pairing socks with sandals for over a year now, but this fall it’s hitting mainstream!

It’s so fun and different, and a great way to add personal style and originality to any look. I recently met with one of my vendors who specializes in bath and body products, and this season they’ve added an entire line of colorful and quirky socks.

And guess what? I bought them all for the store. Look for fun prints, stripes, argyles, and comic-inspired hosiery to add to your wardrobe. Pair ankle socks with wedges and heels and pair knee-socks with flats, mary janes and tennis shoes.

The first 2 pics are all of the cute socks I ordered for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique.

The 3rd pic is a great style lesson from a runway show.

The 4th pic is Prada. Need I say more?

Mark my words! Socks are the new black!

When Jess from FLY Photography approached me for a collaboration, I had no idea the amount of talent I was dealing with. I had been approached 9 times that month by people who wanted to do creative projects, but none of them really had a game plan and most were more interested in benefiting their name instead of “teaming” up. I was starting to get frustrated until Heidi (our store manger) said, “Julie, you don’t owe anyone anything! Stay focused on what you do best and you’ll know when the right person comes along.” A day later I met Jess.

Her specialty is senior portraits, so her idea was for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique to outfit 25 girls for their senior pictures. They would come in a few days prior to the shoot for a fitting and the actual indie shoot would be done in one day around the boutique grounds.

The pictures are amazing and each girl had a blast going through the boutique and choosing items. With the help of our on-site stylists Heidi and Barbara,  each model was magazine ready! We made some new friends and helped empower some young women along the way. The girls brought their own shoes, but all of the clothing, handbags, hats, and jewelry is from the store.

Jess provided me with some great fashion shots to use for promoting the store as well as a phone app. Yep, you heard me right, a PHONE APP! Click here from mobile device to download Fly Photography for Roadkill Ranch I was already blown away at her organization of 25 girls, the quality of the shots, and now a phone app! And, just when I thought she couldn’t get any cooler, she sends over this Roadkill Ranch & Boutique look book that she created! Click here to check it out Look Book.

I’m so glad I met Jess. She is ultra-awesome! Seriously, and just when I was coming down from the “Look Book” high, she delivered a FLY tote full of custom made thank you cards and a disc with some additional pictures of the inside of my store.

Thank you Jess!  And thank you FLY Girls for an amazingly, successful collaboration! We will definitely be “teaming” up again! If you are looking for a creative way to express yourself please contact Jess. She will take care of you and make sure your senior pictures represent your first big step into a new and exciting world. After all, FLY stands for “Free the Lovely You.”

Something to Crow About!

One of my favorite things to do is visual merchandising, and my creative team at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique has done it again! Since we are always on a budget, we like to repurpose old props and give them new life. We wanted to feature this season’s trends including:  glitter, studs and metallics,  but also wanted to create a sense of drama mixed with a bit of mystery.

Maggy took two old mannequins and painted rib cages on them and Barb gave new life to the bird cages with gold sparkle paint. We had so many books left over from our last window, so we decided to paint the spines black and come up with our own titles that were humorously dark and fashionably infused. We added crows with crowns, black branches (thanks to Barb’s trail excursion and some black spray paint) and lots of glitter.

The store looks amazing and I couldn’t have done it without my totally wicked, fashionably dramatic, creative team. Thanks Roadkill Girls!

Heidi, Barb and Maggy ROCK!!!

PS Stay tuned for pics of the Ranch side featuring “Day of the Dead” theme by local artist Leonard Fiedororwicz.

We Heart It!

Roadkill Ranch & Boutique supports “All The Arts For All The Kids”. It’s a non-profit organization that focuses on making sure that each child in the Fullerton School District has an opportunity to be  schooled in the arts. Local artists donated their time to create art  hearts that will be auctioned off at the end of the month. Each participating venue was delivered a heart that will remain on exhibit until the auction. We weren’t sure what heart we were getting until this masterpiece by Wendy Lloyd Davies arrived.

Katherine England (the brainchild behind the program) handpicked each heart for each venue. The more we looked at it, the more we were amazed how it fit so perfectly with the store, and how it represented what the Roadkill Girls are going through at this time. We interpreted it like this: it’s flourishing, it’s blooming, the visions are strong and our roots go deep. The mix of vintage jewelry (our roots) and the eyes centered in them, indicate growing our visions.

We are a tight team and we all encourage each other to follow our dreams and grow our visions. We have some big goals for next year (our 20 years in business anniversary) and this heart is just a reminder that we are strong visionaries who are rooted and grounded and ready to flourish.

We’re not sure if that’s what the artist was thinking when she designed this, or if that’s what Katherine was thinking when she hand-picked it for us, but that’s how we see it and we love it!

Check out  All The Arts for more information.

Mod Squad

Marc (Have I told you I love you?) Jacobs is going MOD for his Spring 2013 collection. Look for bold geometrics, clean lines, stripes, chunks and blocks. He captures the ’60s fashion trend with short mini dresses and skirts, then swings the pendulum to long, sweeping maxi-dresses. I love the sharpness of the line and can’t wait to delve into spring.

Happy Tuesday!

Purple Prediction

Purple seems to be the “new” black on the runways for the sneak peeks of 2013. Major fashion houses like Prada, Louis Vuitton and Chanel are all featuring the color in their collections. When making purchases this season, choose purple for longevity.

Have a great week!
