Trend alert!!! Gigantic,’70s inspired ties for women (and men) loom on the horizon.

I’ve recently spotted a few fearless ties in some of our accessory vendor’s collections, but when Gucci plastered the look on their runway show for spring 2016, well… need I say more?

Look for bright-colored ties with fun prints and huge icons. Pair with jeans and a collared T-shirt for a casual look, or suit up all the way for spunky, fierce style.

When we first opened Roadkill, the store was primarily vintage. I spent a good deal of my time searching through old clothes and accessories for the perfectly-curated mix. I’ve always had a penchant for ties, and would collect them on my buy trips. We sold a few at the store, but the unique ones I kept for myself, and ended up with a pretty eclectic assortment. Then one day, I was inspired (deceived) by a de-clutter article and went crazy. Yep, you guessed it, out went the ties (and some really cool shoes and handbags too). I’ve been sad for years over this temporary act of insanity. (Trust me, my therapist needs therapy after dealing with me.)

You know the old saying, “If you love something set it free, if it comes back it’s yours, if it doesn’t it never was.”? Or is it, “If you love someone…”?  Whatever.  When it comes to awesome ties (or other rare finds), DO NOT SET THEM FREE IF YOU LOVE THEM!!! My little beauties have probably been repurposed into makeup bags or fanny packs by now. (I’m crying paisley tears!!!)  Hopefully, a special one will find it’s way back to me so I can represent the trend without forfeiting my rent for a designer version.

Dare to be big and bold for spring, keep your ties strong, and never let them go.

Stay Stylish,

Jules

His Soles

IMG_0988 IMG_0989 IMG_1661 IMG_1662 IMG_1663

If you think you’re the only one that has a shoe fetish, meet my friend Brent Adams.

This guy is always dressed to the nines with the most fashionable soles to boot. It’s such a breath of fresh air to be around  fashion conscious men. I almost forgot they existed. Up until a few years ago (I finally flew away), I was constantly surrounded by wannabe gang members whose wardrobes consisted of Vans tennis shoes with tube socks, and smelly, baggy jean shorts worn below the waist so low their underwear showed. The look was usually paired with some sort of message T-shirt relating to guns, politics, or how you’d better get your life right or else you’re going to hell. Geeze! I thought I was already in hell. Oops! Did I say that out loud? Sorry, I digress.

Anyway, yes, sharp dressed men (with class) do exist in Fullerton. And they’re all on the Day of Music board of directors (with the exception of Wade and James from Lux, but that’s another blog).

Brent’s shoe collection takes the cake. Every time I see this guy he has a different pair of shoes on. And they are designer!  I’ve always admired his shoe choices, but one day the iconic (and coveted) red and green stripe he was donning hit me like a ton of bricks. “OMG!!! Are those Gucci?” I exclaimed.

“Yes.”  He replied nonchalantly as he swiftly disappeared through the front door of my shop.

Later that evening a bunch of us met at the local wine bar Vino Nostra (for vino and venting), and I decided to delve a little more into Brent’s shoe addiction (I mean hear more about his fabulous designer collection).

He admitted to owning over…hmmm…I better not divulge. He might be the type of guy who hides packages in the trunk of  his car (Alfa Romeo BTW, it’s obvious he likes Italian made) and sneaks them in when his wife isn’t there? I’m seeing her this weekend, so I better not stir anything up.

Let’s just say, including  tennis shoes, flip flops, and driving moccasins, the count is close to… shoot, I just can’t do it!  For now, we’ll just applaud his fierce style and his impeccable taste in shoes and be thankful we can all get a glimpse of a gentlemen who knows that dressing well is a form of good manners.

Remember to walk the walk (in great shoes of course)!

Feeling Blue

Gucci-Spring-2015-Show-Milan-Fashion-Week

I’m feeling blue, but in a good way. Denim is my boyfriend and we’re in love.

After seeing a lot of fall collections the past few weeks, I’m excited to see the “denim on denim” look. Typically in the past, your outfit of the day (#OOTD) would consist of one denim item, but now it’s all about layering different jean washes and denim shirts with jackets to create a casual yet sophisticated look.

This industry moves so fast, I haven’t even had time to take pictures of the new jeans and indigo skirts we received yesterday. Although, I somehow managed to go thrift store shopping and purchase 20 pair of used jeans for an art project. The Roadkill Girls decided to shred denim strips and loop them through a chicken wire frame to create a back drop for our windows. We wanted to drive the message home about the importance of the excessive denim trend this season by creating texture and adding impact.

Pair your chambray top with a darker pair of jeans for a contrast look . Or, go totally tonal by wearing the same color wash of jeans, and jacket. Add some killer accessories to kick it up a notch, or play it down with a basic white T-shirt. Relaxed fit, skinny jeans, boot-cut, flairs and skirts can all be incorporated into this look.

Take your faithful boyfriend jeans and let the layering begin. It’s an easy look to achieve; it’s comfortable, playful, and lovable. Just like a good boyfriend should be. (Wink.)

The second pic is the shredded, denim backdrop the Roadkill Girls are still working on.

Free to Fly

I woke up this morning and thought, “Hey!!! Whatever happened to my blog?” Then I realized it was here the whole time, I was the one who had flown away. I guess my wings had been broken for a while, but they’ve somehow found their way back to the blogging nest and are ready to soar! (Plus, my writing muscles could use some exercise.) I hope you all still love fashion, music and the arts. And birds!

This season it’s all about avian images perched on everything from jewelry to handbags to clothing. There’s just something about a sweet little bird print (or a gigantic brass statement brooch) that attracts attention. Maybe it’s because of their innocuous nature, or their ability to change views by taking off whenever they want? Once again, designers are drawing inspiration from our fancy-feathered friends this season.

The fist pic is Gucci. Need I say more?

The second pic is designer Franck Sorbier. I love this ethereal  gown complete with hand-beaded bodice details. It’s perfect for a Red Carpet appearance.

The third pic is Valentino. I just want to wear this dress around town. I seriously would too! I’d pair it with my Converse tennis shoes and a denim vest. LOL!

And the last three pics are a few of the things we have featured now at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. This is a perfect example of how runway looks are translated into everyday life. A great blouse, a cool handbag or an exciting accessory  is all you need to represent the trend.

I hope everyone has a great day! And remember, the only person holding you back is you! So, fly high and dream big!
