Bright Ideas

“They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway…” It’s true!  Neon hues and bright tones plastered the runways and showrooms of Manhattan (and London, Paris, and Milan) for New York Fashion Week.

Designers are moving heavily into the Day-Glo look for fall and into next spring. The crazy fluorescents gained popularity in the ’80s, along with Manic Panic hair dye (which never lost its allure), big earrings, smoosh socks, hair scrunchies and plastic clothing. (Trust me, I owned it all, and have the pictures to prove it!)

Then one day (just like the overalls and giant shoulder pads trend), it died! No more loud colors. Fashion toned down, designers went into a natural, earthy direction and the color excitement subsided. But now, brights are back!

The first picture is of Fyodor Golan’s runway show. It’s wacky and fabulous and shows the Day-Glo trend to the extreme.

The second and third pics are of blouses we carry at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. If you’re hesitant to wear head-to-toe neon, choose an item with just a hint of color. You can still represent the trend with small accents like bows, trims and jewelry.

If you are tame (we know you’re not since you’re donning these styles, but let’s just pretend), choose one focal item and build your look around it. Pair a hot pink (or other neon hue of your choice) top with white pants or your favorite boyfriend jeans, then accessorize with metal jewelry for a more sophisticated look.

The last picture is a compilation of great ideas and vivid color combinations by patterncurator.com.  Depending on how zany you feel, you may want to try some color blocking. Since the bright tones all seem to work together (in some punchy way), take a block of color and pair it with a contrasting color of your choice. For example: a bright yellow tank top worn under a hot pink blazer is a great way to color block. Add an orange scarf or belt to the outfit, and you’ll be ready to paint the town red! Or lime green! Or both! (Just make sure you have a ton of fun while doing it!)

Live colorfully with no regrets!

Take as Needed

Betsey Johnson is so fun and creative!  I had the privilege of meeting her last year at the MAGIC Trade Show and her energy stuck with me for months. (I know I’ve posted this pic before, but you would too!)

As she prepares for the upcoming New York Fashion Week, Dr. Johnson decided to make invitations out of pill bottles. (No letter press or gold-foiled cards for this lady.) She took medicine bottles and filled them with mini-breath mints then added the information about the event on the outside label. Brilliant!

Betsey describes her collection as a “prescription for dressing.” So, it only made sense to create a doctor-ish-inspired invite.  “I have to take credit for the idea,” she said. “I think getting a bottle of pills is just funny.”

Betsey has always been known for her dramatic and over-the-top runway shows. She says that this show will express a different side of her. (Really? What side is that? People don’t change!)

“It’s more of a real fashion show than ever,” the designer explained. “And I was really scared of it being too serious, too simple, too much a fashion show and not fun.”

Dear Betsey,

I don’t think anything you do could ever be simple or boring. Please step out onto your New York balcony, take a deep breath and remind yourself who you are! You’re a world-wide cultural icon and fashion leader. Fun is your middle name and creativity runs through your  veins. I love your prescription bottles, they’re great! I think everyone should have some Betsey pills, then maybe this world would be a better place. Have an awesome, cart-wheel-filled show!

Love,

Julie Rasmussen

PS Take two and call me in the morning!

Red Roses

Picture 6Picture 8Picture 10

During Thom Browne’s runway show at New York Fashion Week, everything was coming up roses. The  stage was set with a magical, winter forest scene, while male models lay strapped to metal beds donning Browne’s menswear styles and crowns of thorns. The women were dramatically dressed with a huge emphasis on red roses, blooming on everything from tights to dresses to jackets. Each model carried a fresh bunch down the catwalk and cast their bouquets on the death-like men.

Interpretation? It seems like he is putting to death his men’s line as a sacrifice to focus on his women’s collection. I noticed that none of the roses have thorns, so perhaps it’s translating into a season without curse? That’s my best shot.

According to Mr. Browne, “The inspiration was strong women, strong shoulders, strong hips. The rest was just riffs on the color red.”

Rock the Look

Anna Sui brings down the house again during New York Fashion Week. Her 2013 collection was an eclectic mix of Rock n’ Roll, Punk, Rockabilly and Goth inspired looks, with a splash of Pin-Up and ’80s glam. WHOA!!! That was a mouthful. I was so excited to see all of her chunky skeleton jewelry because we actually have similar pieces at Roadkill Ranch right now (yay me).

The Ramones blasted as the cat walkers took the stage with their star-studded looks. It was a concert of  plaids, florals, ripped  fishnets, chunky spikes, buckles and skulls. Every outfit was layered with a mix of good and bad like lace with leather and pretty ruffles paired with torn and shredded pieces.

So, pull out those old Doc Martins and pair them with your boho-chic maxi skirt, add a leather jacket and a big skull necklace and you’ve got the look. Or, take an old party dress, add some fishnet stockings and a denim jacket, then accessorize to the max for a badass day look.

I’m loving all of the options for spring and am slightly reliving my 1980’s glory days. Only this time around, there’s no Aqua Net hairspray  needed for the big hair look. Headbands, cat ears and sparkly pins on tame, colored hair seems to be where we’re heading.

People will always stare, so make it worth their while.

Betsey’s Birthday Bash

During New York’s Fashion Week, Betsey Johnson ended her Spring 2013 show with her famous cartwheel and splits. Her show was a crazy, confetti-driven, hot pink bash. With daughter Lulu jumping out a life-sized cake and Cindi Lauper’s live performance of, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, our fearless, crimped-haired, fuchsia-loving leader knows how to party!  Not only was she celebrating her 2013 spring fashion collection, but her 70th birthday as well. Yep, that’s right, 70!!!

But wait!!! There’s more!!!  The Style Network has just signed the icon and her daughter to star in their own reality show called Betsey and Lulu. The show will feature their lives in the ever-changing fashion world, and  is due to air early next spring.

Happy Birthday Betsey, you are such an inspiration!

The Roadkill Girls love you! xoxo
