“Dressember is a collaborative movement leveraging fashion and creativity to restore dignity to all women.”

When I first heard about the movement to raise awareness about human trafficking through dresses, I was immediately interested. One of our customers who was in full pledge mode inspired me to get involved. I began researching, and realized Blythe Hill, the founder of this movement, was much like me. Our talents both lie in creative fields and the fashion industry, which some may view as unimportant.

Blythe says,”When I started hearing about trafficking, I felt an urgency to do something, and so naturally, I looked at my skill set for a way to engage. The problem was my interests and talents didn’t seem to line up with making a difference. I’m not a social worker, I’m not a lawyer, I’m not a psychologist. I’m not a cop. I’m someone who’s interested in fashion, trend analysis, wordplay, and blogging. My interests felt shallow in the grand scheme of things. I remember feeling powerless, and thinking, ‘There’s nothing I can do.’

I was in college, and felt stifled by the lack of time for creativity, so I decided to create a personal style challenge. I came up with the idea of wearing a dress every day for a month. When I realized the next full month was December, the name “Dressember” came to me and, since I love wordplay, the deal was sealed. So I did it; I wore a dress every day for a month. And I never planned to do it again.

The next year, a handful of girlfriends wanted to do it with me. So I did it again. And then the next year, my girlfriends’ girlfriends wanted to join in. So, when women I didn’t even know were participating in it, I realized this was a good idea.

And then I started to dream bigger. I thought, “maybe I can use Dressember to raise some money for anti-trafficking.” So, in its fifth year, 2013, I aligned Dressember with International Justice Mission and decided, “we’re gonna go big– we’re gonna try to raise $25K,” which felt like a huge, scary goal. When we hit my huge, scary goal– on the third day of our campaign– I realized what had started as a few girls in Orange County wearing dresses for fun had become a community of over 1,200 women in 32 countries who collectively raised over $165,000!”

I love how she used her God-given talents of creativity to make a difference, and I’ll always be empowered by this. Last year we posted a different dress each day from the store (Roadkill Ranch & Boutique) in an effort to raise awareness and directed a lot of people to their site. This year we’ve vowed to do the same.

We haven’t set up our own campaign bank, but since all of the money goes to the same coffer, we are encouraging everyone to go to http://www.dressember.org to get involved or to make a donation.

“THE HEART OF DRESSEMBER IS FREEDOM– THAT EVERY WOMAN HAS THE RIGHT TO LIVE A VIBRANT AND AUTONOMOUS LIFE.”

Viva Las Vegas

R.KillVLV-tix-giveaway-2013

For the past 3 years we’ve  teamed up with our friends over at Steady Clothing for a huge shopping party, and this year is no exception.

“Viva Las Vegas” is the biggest Rockabilly party in the world. It takes place every year in Las Vegas, and it’s 3 full days of fashion shows, car shows, music and entertainment that caters to the Rockabilly lifestyle. Since Roadkill Ranch & Boutique caters to the same lifestyle, we host an annual shopping party prior to the event offering the latest and greatest in styles.

This year we managed to get a pair of Viva Las Vegas tickets (thanks to Mr. Brownfield over at Steady Clothing) to raffle off. Woo Hoo!!! So come on down to Roadkill Ranch on Saturday, March 16th, for tons of style, fun and live music by Hot Rod Trio.

And thanks to Instagram, my new friend Nicolle will be at the store too with some of her awesome, one-of-a-kind hair accessories.

Save the date!

Join us on FB under Roadkill Ranch and on Instagram under Roadkill_ranch for up-to-the-minute event and style info.

Art and Soul

Picture 8PicCollage

You’ve heard me promote Art Walk, artists, and musicians for the past 3 years. It’s something we love to be involved with at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique and feel a real sense of purpose. Last Friday was the 3rd annual Art Walk celebration and assembly woman Sharon Quirk presented Fullerton Art Walk and the sponsors with an official certificate of recognition. We were all so happy!

Brian Prince and Jesse La Tour (the two guys on the right) founded the  Art Walk back in 2010 and since then it has grown to more than 30 venues in Fullerton. Heidi and I (the two girls on the left) were proud to be a part of the planning this year and were so stoked when our local newspaper, The Fullerton Observer pressed this front page picture yesterday!

The giant, cut-out, walking men around town signifies an official venue. The Roadkill Girls came up with “Style Junkie”. It took weeks (and a lot of glue) to put to use our collection of heirlooms, broken jewelry and random crap all in the name of “ART”. (A BIG thanks to Barbara Vornholt for her dedication to the project!)

So when you spy this masterpiece outside of the shop, stop in and get your fix of art and fun!

Stay Creative!!!

Shopping Party

Picture 5

I’m so excited! Tomorrow night is our annual customer appreciation party. We started having pre-Christmas sales at my store a while back after I got really pissed off with some of the big “After Christmas” sales. One year I  purchased several items before the holidays only to find them discounted the very next day after Christmas. I will never shop there again!! (And no, I’m not going to say the name, I don’t play dirty.) Anyway, I like to give my loyal customers a deal before the holidays when everyone needs it the most.

I hope you all will stop by and receive  20% off every single thing in our store!  Corky from Fullerton Foundry will be making delicious treats, Dena from Sort This Out Cellars will be serving up complimentary wine, Holly from Tres Noir will be sharing her new sunglass styles and world renowned pin-up  and burlesque star Ruby Champagne will be making  a special appearance.

Kick off the season in style!

Guess Who?

Dannielynn Birkhead is the new face for Guess (the Kids division). Dannielynn  is the six year old daughter of the late Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith. Her mother died in 2007 from a drug overdose when Dannielynn was just a few months old. Ironically Anna Nicole Smith was a “Guess Girl” in the ’90s and helped launch the ad campaign.

Of course there’s tons of controversy over the decision whether to let the little girl model or not. But, in all honesty, as long as she doesn’t start dating 86-year- old men and doing drugs, I think she’ll be fine.

Good luck Dannielynn!
