Turban Time

It’s been a while sine we’ve seen the turban in a fashionable sense. In the 1960’s it was so glamorous and chic to wrap a dramatic turban-like scarf on your head. Hollywood glamorized it and the fashion industry embraced it.

I met with one of my accessory vendors yesterday and she was raving about the turban trend. She even had pre-made polyester turbans (like the one Kourtney Kardashian is wearing above) for sale.

We’ve seen a glimpse of runway shows for the past year with turbans, but now they are finally hitting the stores and the streets. I bought a ton of scarves and head wraps for the boutique, but passed on the pre-made turbans for now (only because our customers are super-duper creative and would rather twist, tie and make their own version of the head piece). I may bring the pre-made items in as it gets closer to fall; velvet and wool turbans are predicted for the future (but honestly look more like a little cloches and caps).

Look for lots of head wraps, giant bows, big scarves with added brooches, flowers and appliqués. It’s going to be a fun and fashionable summer, so give new life to your tired scarves and glam it up a bit. Plus, it’s the perfect solution for a bad hair day!

That’s a wrap!

Something’s Fishy!

One fish, two fish, gold fish, boob fish. Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, a fish bra. Brilliant! Now I know what I’m going to wear when I chaperone the kids to the Long Beach Aquarium this summer.

I also think it would be great if the OC Fair booth workers at the “Win a Fish” game wear these. That way when people complain, “What am I going to do with a gold fish?” The booth attendants can just point to their bras and say, “DUH!”

Only boring people get bored. Keep those creative juices flowing!

Coachella Style

Coachella, the musical festival that takes place each year in the deserts of California came to end yesterday.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to join the free-loving, bare-footed, crazy-styled party. However, my good friend Corky (owner of Fullerton Foundry) was in attendance and was kind enough to report a live stream of fashion pics for me.

Style mavens (and a slew of gypsies, tramps and thieves) from around the world joined together in the name of music. From half-naked men (and women) to hipsters, to rockers, to hippies, and everything in between, it was the fashion party of the year. (Oh, and there were some bands too.) These pictures speak for themselves, so I need not write much. Summing it up I would say, fun is the new black and any kind of head or hair accessory was a fashion fave.

Thank you Corky for the great coverage! (And for allowing me to live vicariously through you and Ryan.)

Monday in Malibu

I can’t say that rainy days and Mondays always get me down. Today I get to hang out with my BF for some serious shopping and trend-spotting in Malibu. I’m drawing my wardrobe inspiration from this picture. I’m just so excited that the weather has cooled down and I can finally pull out all of my sweaters and coats.

This girl kind of reminds me of me, from the hair to the shoes to the phone. She must be INSTAGRAMMING!

And that’s what I’ll be doing too (in between shopping), so I hope you’ll join me under Roadkill_ranch for the latest finds.

Happy Monday!

Prada Preview

Here’s a sneak peek of what went down the runways for Prada’s 2013 Spring Collection. If I were to sum this up in a few words it would be, retro, glam-rock, geisha vibe, with a hint of Mary Quant. How exciting! I’m glad glitter and glam isn’t going anywhere soon, and I do predict an asian fever in the near future.

When making purchases this season, take advantage of the holiday clearance items with rhinestones and glitter that can be resurrected into spring wardrobes.

Saturday’s Shoot

When Megan Crothers from Megan Jeanne Photography approached me to do a photo shoot for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique,  I had no idea the amount of talent that would surround me. I knew from our conversations that she would be a good fit, and when I finally met her in person, I was sold!  She came to pick up the clothes on Friday night. It was during Art Walk and the store was crazy, busy with patrons and 3 artists. I should have had the items set aside, but time had slipped away from me.

When Megan showed up, I could see the creative wheels in her mind spinning and she began to put together outfits. I knew from the styles that  she was pulling that she “got it”. Not only is she a stylist, but she builds her own stage sets and creates amazing backdrops as well.  Her fashion photography skills emulate a feeling that we strive to translate to our customers.

The first picture was taken in her attic where she hand strung fall leaves and hung them from the beams. I love her ideas, her eye and her personality. And just in time too! We’re getting closer to launching our on line store and Megan’s photography is one of the last pieces to completing our puzzle. I’d show you more shots, but you’ll have to wait until our site is up.

Thanks Megan! And thanks Rachael Barnett for being such a gracious and beautiful model.

In Your Face!

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pics for the week. Face chains! How lovely and utterly approachable; NOT!

I’m sorry, but this has got to be the creepiest and most intimidating look I’ve seen in a while. Oh Wait! I take that back, Halloween is just around the corner, so I think it will work for a few people I know.

Sneak Peek

Lady Gaga will grace the cover of Vogue magazine’s September issue. The publication is celebrating their 120 year anniversary, and Lady  is pictured wearing a purple (because purple is the new black), fishtail gown by Marc (Have I told you I love you?) Jacobs. I can’t wait to escape in the pages of this issue.

And Lady, if you’re reading this, I’m intrigued with your theatrical style. Next time you’re in town, please stop by my Roadkill Ranch Boutique (incognito of course), I have something for you.

Your Fellow Thespian,

Julie Rasmussen

Bear-y Bad!

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic for the week.

“Once upon time, there were three bears and a model.” Hmmmm… you finish the rest of the story, I’m running late this morning. I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!

The Wizard of Aaaahhhs!

I’m so blessed to have the most creative and talented people in my life! I’ve just renamed my photographer friend Adam Petrasek, “The Wizard of Aaaahhhs”! We’ve been doing a lot of photo shoots for Roadkill Ranch and Boutique lately and I must say that every time Adam sends me a picture, I say “Aaahhh…this is AAHHHH SOME!!!”

We were inspired by Tarina Tarantino’s Wizard of Oz jewelry that we carry at the store, with the “Good Witch” and the “Bad Witch” pendants. We happened to have a crow and a bird from some old window displays, so we started to get creative. Everyone had their own spin on “Good Witch”, we went from sweet and innocent to trailer trash queen within minutes. Adam took the shots so he could put both looks in one picture and it turned out brilliant. Thanks to the beautiful Samantha Parks for modeling and thanks  to the “Wizard of Aaaahhhs” for granting us our photographic wishes!
