Trend alert!!! Gigantic,’70s inspired ties for women (and men) loom on the horizon.

I’ve recently spotted a few fearless ties in some of our accessory vendor’s collections, but when Gucci plastered the look on their runway show for spring 2016, well… need I say more?

Look for bright-colored ties with fun prints and huge icons. Pair with jeans and a collared T-shirt for a casual look, or suit up all the way for spunky, fierce style.

When we first opened Roadkill, the store was primarily vintage. I spent a good deal of my time searching through old clothes and accessories for the perfectly-curated mix. I’ve always had a penchant for ties, and would collect them on my buy trips. We sold a few at the store, but the unique ones I kept for myself, and ended up with a pretty eclectic assortment. Then one day, I was inspired (deceived) by a de-clutter article and went crazy. Yep, you guessed it, out went the ties (and some really cool shoes and handbags too). I’ve been sad for years over this temporary act of insanity. (Trust me, my therapist needs therapy after dealing with me.)

You know the old saying, “If you love something set it free, if it comes back it’s yours, if it doesn’t it never was.”? Or is it, “If you love someone…”?  Whatever.  When it comes to awesome ties (or other rare finds), DO NOT SET THEM FREE IF YOU LOVE THEM!!! My little beauties have probably been repurposed into makeup bags or fanny packs by now. (I’m crying paisley tears!!!)  Hopefully, a special one will find it’s way back to me so I can represent the trend without forfeiting my rent for a designer version.

Dare to be big and bold for spring, keep your ties strong, and never let them go.

Stay Stylish,

Jules

Double Trouble

Fendi-Spring-2015micro-bags-trend-2chloe-resort-2016-05_1

mulberry_main__thumbnailLouis-Vuitton-Double-Bag-Trend-2

Two bags are better than one. It’s true, Fendi, Chanel, Chloe, Mulberry and Louis Vuitton all say so!

The trend of toting two bags at the same time is coming in hard this season. Designers are featuring larger silhouettes like a tote or travel bag as a focal point and then accessorizing with a smaller pouch or clutch. Brilliant! Thanks Fashion Industry! Now all of us fashion addicts can purchase two designer bags at once without feeling guilty and be totally justified.

The first picture is Fendi, a functional and easy look to achieve. Add a tiny novelty bag to the outside of a larger one for a funky look.

The second picture is Chanel. Drape a few cross-body bags over your bodice while carrying your main purse. (It’s all the rage.)

The third picture is Chloe. Just carry two in the same hand (no big deal).

The fourth picture is Mulberry. Cross-body over bodice and tote in hand. (My fave.)

The fifth is Louis Vuitton. Just do it, carry two (everyone’s doing it).

This is one sure way to drive handbag sales up for the season. Pretty soon we’ll see designer shoes hanging off of designer bags. Then we can buy two pair of designer shoes, one to wear on our feet and the other to accessorize our two bags. Woot!

And, if anyone tells you that you have too many handbags or shoes, get rid of that person! You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life! The only extra baggage you need is CHANEL!

Chain Reaction

Trend alert!!! Dripping chain bracelets hit the fall runway show of Nina Ricci.

I’ve been seeing a lot of elongated sleeves and oversized arms on clothing this season. Some arm lengths go way beyond the hand appearing the garment is too big, while others are cropped to a three quarter length. I guess anything goes in fashion (What else is new?).  Taking it a step further, Nina Ricci adds gold chain bracelets that drape beautifully over and pass the hand for a dramatic impact.

It’s definitely a new twist on accessories and I’m sure the factories in China are mass producing them as we speak. However, I’m not buying into it. For me, it’s just way too cumbersome! I can’t stand having something in the way of my hands. I am always working, and talking with my hands, so this would just be a hinderance to my everyday way of life. (Imagine snagging everything in sight, and getting yourslef caught in doors and elevators.)

I’m not saying this trend won’t take off; it’s fun and fresh and perfect for performance artists.

But for me, I’m over having my hands in chains.

Happy Monday!

When “Boss Lady” Mandie B. from Heart of Haute met me at the store a few days ago to view the new fall collection, I was beside myself. For the first time since inception, Heart of Haute has collaborated with an artist for an exclusive design on their clothing. And it’s feline-fab!

Heart of Haute is an independent, women-owned, clothing company specializing in retro-inspired dresses. They also happen to be one of our best lines at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Mandie always delivers great styles, fresh new prints and quality fabrics. This season she’s partnered with famed artist El Gato Gomez for an exclusive kitty-cat motif.

El Gato Gomez has gallery representation at the WonderGround Gallery at the Disneyland theme park in California, Creature Features in Burbank, California, The Harold Gollen Gallery in Miami, Florida, and the One-Shot Gallery in New York City. Her art work has also been featured at the amazing modernist cultural events, Tiki Oasis and Modernism Week in Palm Springs.

Since Mandie is a huge fan and avid collector of Gomez’s work, it only made sense to join unions. The mid-century-modern-esque styles consist of border-print dresses and full-circle skirts, matched with kitty-emblazoned, cropped cardigans. The collection is slated to hit Roadkill Ranch & Boutique in mid September and is expected to sell out!

Call the store at 714-773-1156 to book your pre-order, we don’t want any cat fights when the merchandise arrives.

For more info on the collaboration check out: http://www.elgatogomezarts.com and http://www.heartofhaute.com

Have a purrrfect day!

So Fryed!

fryebuildingharness_12r-273x258photo

I admire businesses that have persevered over the years and one of my all-time favorites is The Frye Company. It was founded by John A. Frye in 1863 and is the oldest continuously operated shoe company in the United Sates.

They provided soldiers and pilots with boots during WWII and they have stayed true to their craftsmanship and design. The Frye Harness boot (pictured above in 3 colors) is one of the oldest designs in the line and they are still manufacturing it today.

The Accessories Council Excellence Awards (ACE) will host their 17th annual gala and honor those in the accessory industry that have made great strides and a positive impact to the consumer. Frye will be honored with the first ever “Legacy Award”. Wow!!! What an inspiration! The company is celebrating their 150th anniversary in business.

This is so encouraging to me as the owner of Roadkill Ranch & Boutique, because this year marks our 20 year anniversary. I hope I can leave a legacy like Frye someday. For now, I’m going to keep on keeping on. And, to add a little pep to my step today, I’ve pulled out my favorite pair of Frye boots. (Pictured above.)

Follow your dreams!

Lovely Bones

louis-vuitton-dinosaur-main-de

I’ve been seeing an influx of dinosaur bones and other skeletal images in the fashion industry lately. The first thing to catch my eye last year was this gold dinosaur necklace by Tatty Devine. I thought it was amazing! Then I brought in a few “bone” images on T-shirts and tanks and the customers really dug them. (Pun intended, but I’m also still half asleep, so have a little mercy on me.) The flamingo pic is a post we did on Instagram a few weeks ago from the boutique.

Anyway, Louis Vuitton just released this dinosaur sketch of what their windows will look like for fall. Woot! I’m so excited because we have more Jurassic-inspired items on order for Roadkill Ranch and, our featured artist for October (Matt Brady) makes handmade jewelry from the bones of (real) tiny animals. It’s creepy-cool! But we love it!

Join us on Instagram under Roadkill_ranch or Facebook under Roadkill Ranch for more pics and up-to-the-minute style and event info.

Have a great week and keep those bones strong!

Sailor Jerry

Norman_Keith_CollinsSJ Lock Up Logo

adamphotoSailor Jerry Original Spiced Navy Rum

Norman Keith Collins (AKA Sailor Jerry) was a prominent American tattoo artist widely known for tattooing sailors. He learned how to tattoo from a guy named “Big Mike” who taught him the hand-pricking method. Later he learned how to use a tattoo machine from another guy known as Tatts Thomas.

He was based in Honolulu most of his career and would tattoo the enlisted men that came a shore during WWII. Most of the men went on shore leave with one purpose in mind, to get “Stewed, Screwed and Tattooed.”

Jerry inked hundreds of men with his new style of American folk art; tattoos that mixed traditional elements of continental icons with the shading and artistic process of Japanese tattoo masters. His style evokes war stories and heartache, but it’s the craft and detail of his work that has made “Sailor Jerry” one of the most popular and influential artists of our time.

His style lives on today and continuing his legacy is the Sailor Jerry clothing line and signature Sailor Jerry bottled rum. (Jerry and his friends would take spices from different islands to mix in the rum for a better drink.)

I am so excited that Roadkill Ranch & Boutique will be the exclusive Sailor Jerry clothing and accessory destination in downtown Fullerton. It’s a perfect fit (and they think so too) and to celebrate, we’re having a big party on June 22nd. I hope if you’re in the area you will stop by and see the collection, meet some cool peeps and have a sip of Sailor Jerry rum from the “Rum Ambassador”.

The above pics (except the one of Sailor Jerry in action) were taken a few days ago at my store, we’re getting ready to launch!

Happy Monday!

JAWESOME!

Blonde-Jawstumblr_lmecojQK3t1qc6nzfo1_1280photo

I know what you’re thinking; it’s not “Freaky Friday Fashion” day yet, so why is she posting a transvestite in a Jaws bustier? That picture was taken last year at The Blondes runway show and since then, we’ve seen a resurrection of  “Jaws” merchandise in the fashion world.  From shark tooth jewelry to bloody mouths, it’s all about the 1975 summer horror flick that kept a lot of people from enjoying the beach that year.

Look for the original Jaws poster and shark mouths on T-shirts, tanks and totes, and twisted humor like this “Little Mermaid” swimsuit. The bottom picture is what we have now at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique, so get your cult-like vibe on this summer and dare to sport the mindless, eating machine. According to Steven Spielberg, “It’s like God created the devil and gave him JAWS!!”

I’ve attached the 1975 trailer from Jaws for your viewing pleasure. Watch at your own risk, it’s rather biting!

So Commercial!

My BFF April and I met when we were 3 years old. We grew up living next door to each other in Anaheim and have remained close to this day. She now owns a successful beauty salon in Las Vegas and has recently landed her own radio talk show about the beauty industry and all things “GLAM”. It’s called Atomic April’s Radio Glam. It airs every Tuesday from 3-4 pm, and every Friday at 1pm on Vegasallnetradio.com. Sunday at 10 am is the rebroadcast.

Anyway, I’m so excited that Roadkill Ranch & Boutique is an official sponsor of her show. She just created our first radio commercial in her studio and it aired for the first time yesterday at 3. I love it! I took some pictures and made a slide show, so now we have audio and visual. I hope you like it. Listen closely to the end disclaimer; it’s a bit of April and Julie’s on- going shenanigans. (Stay true to your weird self.)

And don’t forget to listen in and spread the word about her show- Atomic April’s Radio Glam.

Thank you April for always supporting us and for your amazing ability to turn any subject into laughter. A big thanks to Ray from Black Acre Leather and Megan Jeanne Photography (and her models) for capturing some great lifestyle shots. I’m so thankful to have great relationships with truly amazing and creative people.

Support those who support you and forget about those who forget about you. It’s that simple.

xoxo
