Do you like dressing up? Do you like Disneyland? If you said yes to both of these questions, then  consider heading over to the “Magic Kingdom” this weekend for Dapper Day.

Dapper Day is a celebration of stepping out in style. This bi-annual event at Disneyland invites all who dare to be fashionable with a high emphasis on vintage styling. Although retro outfits are not required, all styles and designs are welcomed as long as you have the mentality of wearing your “Sunday Best”.

Roadkill Ranch has become a precursor to the events, and Rockabilly and Pinup aficionados frequent the shop during this time. It’s so great to see  well dressed ladies and gentleman stopping by for a quick style fix.

A vendor called me the other day to tell me about a best T-shirt seller that reads: “Proud Supporter of Sweatpants and Messy Hair.”   I had to politely decline. I just don’t think Roadkill customers would appreciate it. (That’s for another store and another park.) They might have better luck selling me something that says, “Always dress to kill.”

The first two pictures are outfits from Roadkill Ranch, modeled by Marlena Khamrov.

The last three are from last year’s Dapper Day.

Stay Stylish!

“Dressember is a collaborative movement leveraging fashion and creativity to restore dignity to all women.”

When I first heard about the movement to raise awareness about human trafficking through dresses, I was immediately interested. One of our customers who was in full pledge mode inspired me to get involved. I began researching, and realized Blythe Hill, the founder of this movement, was much like me. Our talents both lie in creative fields and the fashion industry, which some may view as unimportant.

Blythe says,”When I started hearing about trafficking, I felt an urgency to do something, and so naturally, I looked at my skill set for a way to engage. The problem was my interests and talents didn’t seem to line up with making a difference. I’m not a social worker, I’m not a lawyer, I’m not a psychologist. I’m not a cop. I’m someone who’s interested in fashion, trend analysis, wordplay, and blogging. My interests felt shallow in the grand scheme of things. I remember feeling powerless, and thinking, ‘There’s nothing I can do.’

I was in college, and felt stifled by the lack of time for creativity, so I decided to create a personal style challenge. I came up with the idea of wearing a dress every day for a month. When I realized the next full month was December, the name “Dressember” came to me and, since I love wordplay, the deal was sealed. So I did it; I wore a dress every day for a month. And I never planned to do it again.

The next year, a handful of girlfriends wanted to do it with me. So I did it again. And then the next year, my girlfriends’ girlfriends wanted to join in. So, when women I didn’t even know were participating in it, I realized this was a good idea.

And then I started to dream bigger. I thought, “maybe I can use Dressember to raise some money for anti-trafficking.” So, in its fifth year, 2013, I aligned Dressember with International Justice Mission and decided, “we’re gonna go big– we’re gonna try to raise $25K,” which felt like a huge, scary goal. When we hit my huge, scary goal– on the third day of our campaign– I realized what had started as a few girls in Orange County wearing dresses for fun had become a community of over 1,200 women in 32 countries who collectively raised over $165,000!”

I love how she used her God-given talents of creativity to make a difference, and I’ll always be empowered by this. Last year we posted a different dress each day from the store (Roadkill Ranch & Boutique) in an effort to raise awareness and directed a lot of people to their site. This year we’ve vowed to do the same.

We haven’t set up our own campaign bank, but since all of the money goes to the same coffer, we are encouraging everyone to go to http://www.dressember.org to get involved or to make a donation.

“THE HEART OF DRESSEMBER IS FREEDOM– THAT EVERY WOMAN HAS THE RIGHT TO LIVE A VIBRANT AND AUTONOMOUS LIFE.”

His Soles

IMG_0988 IMG_0989 IMG_1661 IMG_1662 IMG_1663

If you think you’re the only one that has a shoe fetish, meet my friend Brent Adams.

This guy is always dressed to the nines with the most fashionable soles to boot. It’s such a breath of fresh air to be around  fashion conscious men. I almost forgot they existed. Up until a few years ago (I finally flew away), I was constantly surrounded by wannabe gang members whose wardrobes consisted of Vans tennis shoes with tube socks, and smelly, baggy jean shorts worn below the waist so low their underwear showed. The look was usually paired with some sort of message T-shirt relating to guns, politics, or how you’d better get your life right or else you’re going to hell. Geeze! I thought I was already in hell. Oops! Did I say that out loud? Sorry, I digress.

Anyway, yes, sharp dressed men (with class) do exist in Fullerton. And they’re all on the Day of Music board of directors (with the exception of Wade and James from Lux, but that’s another blog).

Brent’s shoe collection takes the cake. Every time I see this guy he has a different pair of shoes on. And they are designer!  I’ve always admired his shoe choices, but one day the iconic (and coveted) red and green stripe he was donning hit me like a ton of bricks. “OMG!!! Are those Gucci?” I exclaimed.

“Yes.”  He replied nonchalantly as he swiftly disappeared through the front door of my shop.

Later that evening a bunch of us met at the local wine bar Vino Nostra (for vino and venting), and I decided to delve a little more into Brent’s shoe addiction (I mean hear more about his fabulous designer collection).

He admitted to owning over…hmmm…I better not divulge. He might be the type of guy who hides packages in the trunk of  his car (Alfa Romeo BTW, it’s obvious he likes Italian made) and sneaks them in when his wife isn’t there? I’m seeing her this weekend, so I better not stir anything up.

Let’s just say, including  tennis shoes, flip flops, and driving moccasins, the count is close to… shoot, I just can’t do it!  For now, we’ll just applaud his fierce style and his impeccable taste in shoes and be thankful we can all get a glimpse of a gentlemen who knows that dressing well is a form of good manners.

Remember to walk the walk (in great shoes of course)!

Frozen

for Roadkill Ranch 1photo

In case you’ve been wondering why I haven’t blogged in a while, I’ve been frozen. I won’t bore you with my personal life, but yesterday for the first time in a very long time, I began to see myself again. Do you ever feel like you don’t know who you are anymore? I think it happens to the best of us at some point in our lives. Anyway, my son was begging me to take him to see the new Disney movie Frozen (he didn’t really have to prod for long, I break for Disney movies). And needless to say, it was a fantastical fantasy!  I started tearing up when Elsa was singing “Let it Go.” I began relating it to my own life and when she stomped her foot down and belted out, “Here I stand and here I’ll stay!”, the powerful lyrics penetrated my very soul.  I haven’t stopped singing it since, so I’m going to pull an 8th grade move and say that this is my theme song.

I loved all of the colors and the frosty, iridescent palets they used in the film. And ironically enough, I had purchased some jewelry for Roadkill Ranch (before I saw the film) that was frosty, and ice-like with iridescent tones. And even more ironic than that, the jewelry hit the store yesterday, the same day the movie was released.

Look to this season with a fresh new glow and add a bit of shine to your wardrobe. Also, remember it’s OK to cry and it’s OK to let it go! I’ve attached Demi Lovatos “Let it Go” for your listening pleasure.

I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!

Yo Bitches!

1236573_10151903797192722_1097513174_n65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Press Roompaul_cranstonx-largeScreen Shot 2013-09-23 at 8.34.51 AM

What’s up Yo?

The Emmys are always full of amazing gowns and jewelry, and I’m sure every fashion blogger will be writing about the best and worst dressed, but for me, it was all about the win for Breaking Bad!

This is my favorite show ever, and Vince Gilligan (the creator) is beyond brilliant. The cast is outstanding, the script is outstanding, and the filming is outstanding. So, I was more than thrilled to see them win for “Outstanding Drama Series”.  (YES!!! Bitches!!!)

I feel close to all of the characters, they seem so real. And I love them all, especially RJ Mitte who plays Flynn (or Walt Jr.).  I had the pleasure of meeting him at a pre-Emmy party a while back. Roadkill Ranch and Boutique was invited to a celebrity gift suite to promote our store and RJ stopped by. He had heard about us through his friend Joell who happens to be our friend as well, so we had a mutual bond. He is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met and am so grateful to have met him and to have his support for Roadkill. (That’s right bitches!!!)

Congratulations to RJ and to the rest of the Breaking Bad cast. You guys deserve it all! I’m forever hooked (pun intended).

PS And how can you not love Jesse? I’ve attached his “Bitch” compilation to start your Monday off with!

Gone Fishing

1234272_687722494589173_1767607208_n

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, a fish bowl earring/hat. What possesses a man to wear this?

It must make him happy. I guess if something brings you that much happiness, you do everything in your power to keep it near and dear to you. Or, maybe he didn’t trust his neighbors enough to feed his fish while he went on vacation, so he just took them with him?

Thanks to one of my BFs, Simone, for sending this over. It’s one of three things that keep us bonded- freaks. The other two are fashion and food. We can seriously stay up all night talking about fashion, food and freaks.

I’d like to invite this man to our next girl’s night out. I’m sure he’d stay up all night with us and talk about fashion, food and freaks. Plus, I’d like to know the story behind the cupie doll and Pokemon characters on his hat.

Snoopy Style

Scan 132620001

Spring 2014 is looking retro-fabulous with Tommaso Aquilano and Robert Rimondi at the helm of Fay. They’ve taken ’70s style hoodies, skater skirts and baseball shirts and twisted them up with rainbow colors and Snoopy icons.

This is seriously something I would have worn in 1973. Oh wait! Here’s a picture of me in 1973 on my way to school with my yellow, Snoopy lunch box. Snoopy brings back some instant, happy childhood memories, so I’m going to say, “Yay for Fay!”

All Fay needs now  is some Woodstock accessories and a few Charlie Brown T-shirts and the line will be complete! Or, better yet, re-producing some metal, lunch boxes as handbags would be adorable. I wish I would have kept mine.

I can’t wait for this collection to hit the stores so I can buy a piece of happiness.

Book Marc

34

Last week Heidi (the store manager of Roadkill Ranch & Boutique) and I were invited to an Emmy celebrity party on Melrose, hosted by Doris Bergman and Associates. It was a lovely day full of TV stars and industry people. We had the opportunity to promote Roadkill Ranch & Boutique and network with some amazing souls. (I will post pics this week.)

Since it was a daytime event, we were out early and decided to explore the area. Of course you all know I break for Marc Jacobs, so when we saw his book store… SCREECH!

Up until that point, the highlight of my day was meeting Robert Wagner, but when I caught this giant eyeball blinking in the window of Book Marc (How cute is that name?), thoughts flooded my brain about the genius that powers Marc Jacobs. There was no place to park (What else is new?), but I noticed a loading zone. Heidi (AKA Ethel) pretended to load our mannequins in the car while I ran into the store in hopes to see Marc Jacobs and express my undying love. (My fantasy life is awesome!)

Unfortunately, he wasn’t there. And of course, no pictures allowed. But, after 10 minutes of questioning the girl behind the counter of his whereabouts, she finally caved and let me take a pic of the eyeball. I’m pretty sure she just wanted to get rid of me. After I told her I wanted to get stuck in an elevator with Marc for hours just to pick his brain, she gave me a “you are crazy” look. Oh, who cares what she thinks? Plus, now I can share the cool window display with you all.

Happy Monday! Stay true to yourself!

Mr. Fox

Paris-Fashion--mai_1685559a

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, a fox frock.

It looks like the fantastic Mr. Fox is on his way to super stardom. We’ve seen a lot of fox images recently in the fashion industry, but this design surpasses them all.

My oldest son keeps me in the loop on the latest video crazes and Netflix series. It’s good to have young blood around you, but at times can be rather draining. (Ever since he got me hooked on Breaking Bad, I haven’t had a good night sleep in weeks.)

A few days ago he introduced me to the “What Does the Fox Say?” video on Youtube. Now, I want to do a photo shoot with all of my creative soul mates in the woods, and I can’t stop singing the song.

I’ve attached the video for your viewing pleasure; now you too can be culturally bound to “What Does the Fox Say?”

Escape!

Keyboard-Jacket-Button-Fashion-Design-1

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, a keyboard jacket.

Perfect for escaping, controlling and deleting on the spot. Too bad it doesn’t work in real life. Wouldn’t it be great to hit the “escape” button and actually disappear for a while, or  “delete” to stop people who have diarrhea of the mouth?
