Hey Cupcake!

Hey Cupcake,

Did you miss me?

I missed you.

I just got back from a buy trip in Las Vegas and I’m so excited about all of the fabulous fall merchandise that’s slated to hit Roadkill Ranch & Boutique over the next month. From gorgeous holiday dresses, to glow-in-the-dark leggings, to western boots, I’m confident our eclectic mix will be more than stellar.

Aside from my crazy-busy daily routine (and distractions) of store stuff, web stuff, phone stuff, and boy stuff, I love to break for photo shoots. Wait! Did I say boy stuff? I meant business stuff.

It all started a few days ago when we received a splendid new dress from Heart of Haute. The beautiful design engraved with rich color combinations of lavenders and mints and etched with gold, took our breath away as we all fell into a swoon. (Just kidding, we all didn’t fall into a swoon, but it sounded really romantic.) As we were admiring our fancy frock, one of the girls said it resembled a cake. Our creative juices began to flow, and the rest is history. We ended up at Hapa Cupcakes in Fullerton the next morning for a photo shoot.

Hapa Cupcakes is the cutest, little cupcakery in town, and the owners are really sweet (pun intended). They were also featured on Cake Wars last June and won 3rd place, so they’re kind of a big deal. Luckily, we know a gal who knows a gal who knows another gal, and we were able to set up a shoot along with a custom-colored cupcake to match the dress.

Isn’t it amazing how one pretty dress can offer so much delicious energy? I hope you enjoy our mid-week blurb on dresses and desserts. So, the next time you get overwhelmed with “stuff”, just take a little sugar break (Did I mention all of their cupcakes are alcohol-infused?). Then, visit  Roadkill Ranch & Boutique to see more of our creative curation.

Stay Stylish,

Jules

Fringe Benefits

Chloe-Caramel-Fringe-Hudson-Mini-BagIMG_8127 IMG_8281Unknownvalentino-spring-2014-trends-runway-collection-fringe-bags-351x500

Fringe! Get it while it’s hot!

Last season we began to see fringe flying off clothing and handbags; some fashion industry experts predicted it would be a quickly fading trend. However, when designers like Chloe and Valentino strutted the tousled tassels on their runways, it was a sure sign of solidification.

The look is strong for fall and will be moving into spring 2016 as well.

The first picture is a beautiful, cognac leather Chloé bag. Yes, I lost sleep over this beauty. Damn!!! I want it now!!!

The next three bags are what we carry at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique.

The last picture is Valentino.

Look for fun colors and lots of ostentatious displays of fringe. And if a designer bag is too much of a commitment, go for something more affordable from Roadkill. The benefit? You’ll be representing the trend and still be able to pay your rent.

Stay Stylish,

Jules

Mad for Plaid

I love everything about fall, the cooler weather, the warmer clothes, the hot drinks, the cozy fireplaces, the mountain getaways, pumpkin spice everything (OK maybe that’s getting old), but you get the idea, and plaid! Just as the seasons change, so do our wardrobes, and plaid is always a traditional staple. I’m not saying you can’t wear plaid during the other months, there are tons of cute gingham and light-colored combos available, but those big buffalo plaids and classic tartans just scream fall!

After viewing  some of the runway shows, I was glad to see the checkered styles with new twists. Look for high-low cuts and flounce detailing on blouses and jackets. Pair your traditional tartans with heavy studded jewelry and thick chains for a punkish vibe, or wear an all-over coat dress with short boots for a cool, indie look.

We think men look sexy in plaid too (that’s why Roadkill Ranch is the number one Pendleton distributor in Orange County)! Wear your Pendleton alone or layer with a white T-shirt for a dapper look.

The first picture is from the Chanel runway show.

The second picture is from the Tommy Hilfiger collection.

The third picture is M Missoni’s ad campaign.

The fourth picture is Sydney Beaver modeling for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. We think our photo shoot is better than Missoni. (We’re not biased or anything.)

The last two pictures are of our stylish man friends (Matt Brady and Joshua Titus), modeling Pendleton shirts for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique.

So grab a good book, a good cup O’Joe and get cozy somewhere (in your plaid of course). Because fashion is a feeling, and you deserve to feel fab!

PS Take quick advantage of  this weather, tomorrow may be 80 degrees again (blogging from a cute leopard chair in Fullerton, California).

Happy Sunday Funday! I’m packed up, fueled up, watered up and ready to hit the road.

The MAGIC trade show is happening next week in Las Vegas and I’ll be buying fall and holiday merchandise for Roadkill Ranch & Boutique. Yep, I’m heading into 120 degrees weather to buy sweaters and jackets. Yay me!

I won’t be blogging next week, because I’m going to be so busy having fun (I mean working). But I promise to come back with a full fashion report and lots of stories.

Check out our insatgram account @Roadkill_ranch for up-to-the-minute show excitement and more.

I hope everyone has a great week. Stay cool and stay stylish!

Skirting The Issue

As a boutique buyer, trying to figure out the “next big thing” can be overwhelming at times. With all of the runway and fashion shows, street style looks, and vendor suggestions influencing my buy, I have to set rules for myself.

Rule #1- If I like it, I buy it.

Rule #2- Always refer to rule #1.

Paris Fashion Week recently ended (I live vicariously through photos) and the styles were from one extreme to the other. The runway shows tend to lean avant- garde, while the actual street style trends send a different (yet more palatable) message. One common thread I’ve seen on all walks during this time is skirts!

Skirts are leading the way this season as a wardrobe staple. It doesn’t matter length or fit, anything goes. I’ve noticed mini-skirts paired with textured tights and floor-length maxi skirts with layered tops. From billowy, flowing ruffles, to A-line, retro-inspired classics, it’s all about the skirt! And I’m proud of the unique selection we currently have in stock at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique.

The first two pictures are street style shots in Paris during fashion week. I love how the Parisians take their style seriously. The first time I went to Paris (not for fashion week, for fun) I was in culture shock. Everyone was dressed beautifully with tailored looks and stylish outfits. I did not see one disheveled person in sweat pants and messy hair. It was pretty damn amazing.

The last four pictures are skirts we have at the boutique. We took our own street style shots in Fullerton, and I think we weighed in considerably. Although, we still see people walking aground in pajama bottoms and unkept hair, we’re at least trying our best to set fashionable standards.

Look for long skirts with cascading ruffles in denim, plaid and chiffon. Pair with a fitted T-shirt for an eclectic look.

A-line skirts are timeless, classic styles. Wear alone for a clean, vintage-inspired look, or pair with a tulle petticoat for a Rockabilly flair.

Pencil skirts never go out of style. Invest in a solid black or dark denim piece to mix and match with blazers and other silhouettes. Look for piping details and all-over printed fabrics like polka dots and novelty prints.

Just because you’re not in Paris doesn’t mean you can’t kick up that certain “je ne sais quoi” you’ve been hiding.

Stay Stylish!

Trend alert!!! Dripping chain bracelets hit the fall runway show of Nina Ricci.

I’ve been seeing a lot of elongated sleeves and oversized arms on clothing this season. Some arm lengths go way beyond the hand appearing the garment is too big, while others are cropped to a three quarter length. I guess anything goes in fashion (What else is new?).  Taking it a step further, Nina Ricci adds gold chain bracelets that drape beautifully over and pass the hand for a dramatic impact.

It’s definitely a new twist on accessories and I’m sure the factories in China are mass producing them as we speak. However, I’m not buying into it. For me, it’s just way too cumbersome! I can’t stand having something in the way of my hands. I am always working, and talking with my hands, so this would just be a hinderance to my everyday way of life. (Imagine snagging everything in sight, and getting yourslef caught in doors and elevators.)

I’m not saying this trend won’t take off; it’s fun and fresh and perfect for performance artists.

But for me, I’m over having my hands in chains.

Happy Monday!

Freak-Shoe-Friday-Peter-Popps-Round-White-CiRCLE-Shoes

Here’s my “Freaky Friday” fashion pick of the week. Scissor handle shoes by designer Peter Popps.

Not sure where I’d wear these? Parent teacher meeting? Blind date? The grocery store? Meh!

I think they’d be good costumes for a movie about the cultivation of cut-throat fashion designers who live in an all white city underneath New York’s 5th Avenue. The evil cult leader stomps around in these ginormous scissor-like shoes slamming patterns and sketches in front of the members and demanding them to produce stylish designs. Some escape the cult through a secret glass elevator that leads to Central Park, but others are brainwashed into conforming and eventually earn scissor shoes of their own. Of course there’s some weird torture involved (like being forced to sleep in cheap, scratchy fabrics), a love triangle, and lots of robots with attitudes.

OK- it could use some developing, but it’s a start. And I’m still half asleep (I stayed up way too late last night watching Netflix), so that’s my excuse. I’m tired! Ha!

Feeling Blue

PART_1438741552017

Gucci-Spring-2015-Show-Milan-Fashion-Week

I’m feeling blue, but in a good way. Denim is my boyfriend and we’re in love.

After seeing a lot of fall collections the past few weeks, I’m excited to see the “denim on denim” look. Typically in the past, your outfit of the day (#OOTD) would consist of one denim item, but now it’s all about layering different jean washes and denim shirts with jackets to create a casual yet sophisticated look.

This industry moves so fast, I haven’t even had time to take pictures of the new jeans and indigo skirts we received yesterday. Although, I somehow managed to go thrift store shopping and purchase 20 pair of used jeans for an art project. The Roadkill Girls decided to shred denim strips and loop them through a chicken wire frame to create a back drop for our windows. We wanted to drive the message home about the importance of the excessive denim trend this season by creating texture and adding impact.

Pair your chambray top with a darker pair of jeans for a contrast look . Or, go totally tonal by wearing the same color wash of jeans, and jacket. Add some killer accessories to kick it up a notch, or play it down with a basic white T-shirt. Relaxed fit, skinny jeans, boot-cut, flairs and skirts can all be incorporated into this look.

Take your faithful boyfriend jeans and let the layering begin. It’s an easy look to achieve; it’s comfortable, playful, and lovable. Just like a good boyfriend should be. (Wink.)

The second pic is the shredded, denim backdrop the Roadkill Girls are still working on.

Mannequin Madness

There’s been a huge emphasis on body type lately in the fashion industry. Yesterday I introduced you to plus-size model Tess Holliday who embraces who she is. Victoria’s Secret is talking about adding a plus-size model to their Angel runway shows to  effectively represent their range of bra and undie sizes. And now, Topshop, the junior chain store out of London has just been attacked for their mannequins being too skinny.

Laura Berry lambastes the store, “I’d love to hear how you can justify the ridiculously tiny mannequin in your Bristol Cribbs Causeway store? We come in all shapes and sizes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being the size you naturally are. I believe we should all feel comfortable in our own skin. Having said that, this mannequin is quite frankly ridiculously shaped.” She goes on in another rant accusing them of thinking they’re superior and insensitive, then brags how she took her size 10/12 legs and walked out the door.

OK! STOP people! Just STOP!!! It’s a display! It’s one thing to be proud of what size you are, but when you start picking on helpless mannequins, that’s just wrong! And if you’re truly happy with who are, you won’t be hating on other body types! It’s contradictory! Maybe Topshop just wanted to show how the outfit looked pulled together? Displays come in all shapes and sizes too. It’s an art form, the art of merchandising. Now you’re offending the artist who made the form. (That’s wrong too!) When we first opened Roadkill we made our own displays from wooden poles cemented in buckets. We were on a budget, and honestly couldn’t afford to buy mannequins, but wanted to display full outfits. Twenty-two-years later, we have finally acquired  our very own mannequin.

She came to us when my friend Corky spotted her at the garage sale of a mutual friend Cristal Drake. I was being tagged left and right on social media to rescue her (and she did need rescuing, she was scantily clad at the time of the sale). I picked Maribel the mannequin up (yes, she was already named), and took her down to the boutique where Sydney glammed her up her in a pretty dress and accessories. Ever since then, she’s been one of the girls. We talk to her, we take her to our events, we make sure she looks good in the spotlight of our window and when she doesn’t cooperate a dress change, we get frustrated with her (it’s not easy removing body parts to dress mannequins).  According to my staff, when things are left undone, Maribel is to blame. Apparently, she magically comes to life at night and rules the store. She tries on clothes, leaves messes and parties like a rock star. (We’re all a little mad around here.)

My point? Quit picking on dress forms. Boutique owners don’t wake up in the morning with the mind set of, “Who can we offend today?”  We just want to display the newest merchandise. And, mannequins are people too!!! It’s true! Did you know there’s an actual law in Georgia prohibiting the changing of clothes of a storefront mannequin unless the shades are down? (I’d like to think this law is to protect the mannequins. Wink.) Check it out on http://www.totallyuselessknowledge.com

Seriously though,  if you love who you are it will show, you won’t be hating on other body types or inanimate objects.  If you’re not happy with who you are, make some changes. We all have choices and a free will. Just don’t choose to berate Maribel, she’s also got a temper and she’s not afraid to use it!

The first pic is of the Topshop mannequin in question.

The second pic is the day Maribel became a Roadkill Girl.

The third and fourth pics are at Slide Bar during our Roadkill Rocks drink launch party. (That’s another story.)

Top: Maribel, Marlena Khamrov, Sydney Beaver, Julie Rasmussen, Savannah Kaefer and Barbara Vornholt.

Bottom: Jeremy Popoff (owner of Slide Bar) and Julie Rasmussen.

The fifth pic is of Maribel on Instagram. I didn’t bother cropping out our Instagram info just incase you’d like to join us. Check out more pics of Maribel by using the hashtag #maribelthemannequinisfabulous.

I hope everyone has a great day!
