Gone Fishing

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, a fish bowl earring/hat. What possesses a man to wear this?

It must make him happy. I guess if something brings you that much happiness, you do everything in your power to keep it near and dear to you. Or, maybe he didn’t trust his neighbors enough to feed his fish while he went on vacation, so he just took them with him?

Thanks to one of my BFs, Simone, for sending this over. It’s one of three things that keep us bonded- freaks. The other two are fashion and food. We can seriously stay up all night talking about fashion, food and freaks.

I’d like to invite this man to our next girl’s night out. I’m sure he’d stay up all night with us and talk about fashion, food and freaks. Plus, I’d like to know the story behind the cupie doll and Pokemon characters on his hat.

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic for the week, a skull cap. Whoever the brain child is behind this creation, gets 2 thumbs up for brilliantly recreating the traditional skull cap. Although this is rather freaky, I find it rather humorous as well.

I love the pink, fresh look of  a healthy brain, but I do think there should be some options. Next, they need to make one that’s black and burned with a touch of green to resemble a brain on crack. It could be a good campaign for drug abuse awareness. I’m just sayin’.

Lovely Bones

I’ve been seeing an influx of dinosaur bones and other skeletal images in the fashion industry lately. The first thing to catch my eye last year was this gold dinosaur necklace by Tatty Devine. I thought it was amazing! Then I brought in a few “bone” images on T-shirts and tanks and the customers really dug them. (Pun intended, but I’m also still half asleep, so have a little mercy on me.) The flamingo pic is a post we did on Instagram a few weeks ago from the boutique.

Anyway, Louis Vuitton just released this dinosaur sketch of what their windows will look like for fall. Woot! I’m so excited because we have more Jurassic-inspired items on order for Roadkill Ranch and, our featured artist for October (Matt Brady) makes handmade jewelry from the bones of (real) tiny animals. It’s creepy-cool! But we love it!

Join us on Instagram under Roadkill_ranch or Facebook under Roadkill Ranch for more pics and up-to-the-minute style and event info.

Have a great week and keep those bones strong!

Shadow Shows

I love good old fashioned fun! When I saw these shadow cards being offered from our vendor Spitfire Girl, I immediately bought them for the store. It’s so fun to make animal and monster shadows on your wall, it reminds me of when I was growing up. I had a great childhood and I was lucky to be blessed with a best friend who lived right next door. Despite the fact that both of our parents were divorced and it was tough times for everyone, April and I stuck together and helped each other get through life.

We created our own happiness. We had big dreams and big ideas and nothing would stop us! We were planning on moving to New York, because if we could make it there, we could make it anywhere! We took dance class with Steven Peck at The Fox Theater in Fullerton, (It’s ironic how my boutique is just down the street from the Fox today.) and dreamt of starring on Broadway. It kept us creative.

I remember when April would spend the night, we would stay up all night giggling. My mom would yell from her bedroom, “Get to sleep girls!” But we couldn’t help but crank call people (back then there was no caller ID), make up funny stories, and create shadow shows on the walls.

April recently sent me this video of the Pilobolus Dance Theater called “Shadow Land”. It’s a musical theater production about  a young girl who moves to New York to find her dreams and it’s all done with shadows. I got chills when I saw this, it’s absolutely amazing. And it just goes to show you that good old fashioned fun is inspiring and can foster the imaginations of everyone.

I hope you love this video as much as I do. And keep your dreams alive!!!

Inspiring Insights

Every season New York Magazine asks top designers to give us a hint of what we can look forward to in their up coming collections. Without giving away too much proprietary information, the designers were asked to submit one picture along with one word that best describes the inspiration for their fall creations. The mix varied from mod shapes to funk to outer space, but these were a few of my favorite looks. I guess I’m drawn to the mystery of things. These also seem to have a “Hitchcock” vibe, and well, I love Alfred Hitchcock. Sold!

The first picture is Kenneth Cole and the word is “Liberation”.

The second picture is Monika Chiang and the word is “Flight”.

The third picture is Cynthia Rowley and the word is “CuRious”.

The fourth picture is Yigal Azrouel and the word is “Temptation”.

The last two pictures are my submissions. They’re posters from the original movie release of  “The Birds”. I’m pretty sure I’ve nailed the inspiration source. Who can deny it? My words for both would be “Hitchcock”.

I’ve attached the final scene from the 1963 thriller “The Birds” by Alfred Hitchcock for your morning suspense fix. I hope you like it. Guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Wild Wedges

Wedges and platforms are popping up bigger-than-life this season.

Pair with maxi skirts, boyfriend jeans, or just about anything for a dramatic twist on style. Here are three of my faves.

The first platform wedge is by Dolce & Gabbana. It’s a fun and wild masterpiece; perfect for kicking up your look.

The second platform wedge is by Red Valentino. It’s fresh and sweet and perfect for summer.

The third platfrom wedge is by Prada. It’s slightly mysterious and a tad bit serious with a hint of domination.

A girl can never have too many shoes and it’s a quick and easy way to update your wardrobe.

Walk in style!

Egging It On

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pics for the week- “Eggs Over-Obsessive”.

Designer Tanju Babacan delivered a runway show in Istanbul last week that was really egg-credible. Dresses, blouses, dusters and accessories were covered in eggs, and the logo on the stage resembled strips of bacon. (I’m getting hungry.)

It seems a little scrambled to me, but stranger things have happened. I’m just waiting for someone to come up with a clutch bag that looks like rye toast to complete the look.

OK, I’m off to Denny’s for breakfast now.

Who let the dogs out?

There’s a big surge in the fashion industry involving dogs. (And no I’m not talking about the shady knock-off manufacturers, they’re called something else.) Designers everywhere are using strong and fierce dogs as their icons on T-shirts, handbags and more.

The top photo was taken at Roadkill Ranch & Boutique and the bottom two pics are Givenchy. This is just a glimpse of what is to come. Say goodbye to tiny pups and pink poodles, it’s all about the tough dog now. Because they are “Ruff-Ruff” (sorry, I couldn’t help it).

Stay stylish and don’t bark up the wrong tree!

Power Players

It’s out! Forbes has just released their yearly list of the world’s 100 Most Powerful Women, and the line up is pretty awesome. Taking the #1 spot is German chancellor Angela Merkel. Lady Gaga weighs in at #14, snuffing out Queen Elizabeth who lands the #26 slot.

Aside from the dignitaries and political power houses, it’s great to see some fashion industry gurus and entertainers making the list. Miuccia Prada, Anna Wintour and Diane Von Furstenburg were also on the coveted scroll.

So, for those of you who don’t think fashion and art is important, you might want to pick up the latest issue of Forbes today. Until then, click here to see the entire list.  100 Most Powerful Women

Creepy Cushion

Here’s my “Freaky Friday Fashion” pic of the week, the ugly furniture cushion look. It’s so attractive and hides your middle, so you don’t have to worry about over eating at your next event. Just grab any old cushion (the dirtier the better), tie it around your bodice, and you’re done! For an added feature, crush up some crackers and smash them around the buttons.
